CORPUS CHRISTI — The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi men's and women's cross country teams have released their 2014 schedule, head coach Shawn Flanagan announced today. The schedule is very challenging and will feature a variety of competitive courses and teams.
Flanagan, who is entering his 15th season at the reigns of the cross country program and has high expectations for both teams.
"We're pumped up about how we can do at the conference meet. Our men have have seen steady improvement and our women have not been where they're used to the last couple years," Flanagan said. "We're looking for great improvements on both sides."
"We've got a lot of meets scheduled early in the season, and we're using those to prepare for the Southland Conference meet," said Flanagan. "We're really excited about some of the places we're going to go. We're going to the Texas A&M meet for the first time in a while and the Alabama Invitational for the first time ever."
The season will kickoff Friday, Aug. 29, as A&M – Corpus Christi will look to repeat its success at the Rio Grande Valley Relays. Last season both the men and women had the top four finishes in the event.
The Islanders will then head to Houston on Sept. 12 to race in the Rice Invitational, which will play host to several Southland Conference teams, giving the teams a chance to see where they stack up against their conference foes.
A&M - Corpus Christi will make a stop in College Station, Texas, to compete in the Texas A&M Invitational on Sept. 20. The meet will include some of the best teams in the nation.
Both teams will then return to the Coastal Bend to host the 15th annual Islanders Splash at West Guth Park. The collegiate meet will take place Friday, Sept. 26, while the high school and middle school meets will be the following day, Sept. 27. The Islanders Splash is a very vital meet for A&M – Corpus Christi because it not only gives Islanders' fans a chance to see the team in action, but also provides a very challenging course.
The Islanders will have one more opportunity to see where they stand before the postseason begins, when they make the trip to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the University of Alabama Invitational on Oct. 17. Just five days later, the Islanders will make the trek to Terre Haute, Ind. for the NCAA Pre-Nationals on Oct. 28. The Pre-Nationals serve as a measuring point to see where the teams stack up against some of the top teams in the nation.
The teams will have a week off before heading to Natchitoches, La., to compete in the Southland Conference Championships on Nov. 3. The men will look to better their third-place finish from the 2013 season while the women will try to improve from their fifth-place finish.
On Nov. 14, A&M - Corpus Christi will head to the regional meet in Fayetteville, Ark., as they try to qualify for the NCAA Nationals. Like the Pre-Nationals, the National meet on Nov. 22 will also be held in Terre Haute, Ind.
