Islanders Set Sights on Southland Championships
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi men's and women's cross country teams will make the trip to Lake Charles, La., for the Southland Conference Championships on Friday.
The event has not been hosted by McNeese State since 1994, which was prior to the Islanders joining the Southland Conference. This will also mark the first time since 2005 that the event has been held outside of Texas.
"We've prepared all season for this event, and I think we are really ready for it and tomorrow we will go out and do battle," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "The battleground has changed with the extreme amount of rain that has fallen here, so we have to go out and practice on this course tonight and maybe make a few adjustments on the plans, but overall the general plan is the same.
"We're going to go out and run as well as we possibly can tomorrow and hopefully we will prevail."
The Islanders come into the conference meet with the women winning four of their last six meets, while the men have won two meets during that time. Cecilia Jones is also back for her senior year to compete in the championships after placing 10th in the meet last year, earning a spot on the all-conference team. Both teams earned a fourth place finish in last year's competition.
If A&M – Corpus Christi wants to come out on top this year, it will have to get past some stiff competition. The Southland boasts five men's teams ranked in the South Central Region, while the women have four teams in the rankings. However, the Islanders men and women check into the rankings at No. 9 and No. 13, respectively.
Host McNeese comes into the race as defending champion on the men's side after dethroning Lamar, who had won the previous six meets. Stephen F. Austin will come into the meet as the defending champion for the women's race.
The meet will take place at the Ward 3 Rec Complex, with the women's 6k race set to start at 8:30 a.m., while the 50th running of the men's competition will begin at 9:30.
Updates will be provided throughout the race on Twitter, while live results can be found here.
