Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Sweep the Islanders Splash

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Men's and Women's Cross Country teams swept the top spots Friday night at the 13th Annual Islanders Splash at West Guth Park. The men's team clinched first place by one point over Southland opponent Central Arkansas, marking the third straight year the Islanders have won the Islanders Splash. The women's team also topped Central Arkansas to bring home the title, after finishing second at last year's Splash.  

"I'm really pleased with how well both teams did tonight to bring home both titles," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "They have been training really hard lately to help in the long run at the conference and regional meets."

The No. 9 ranked women's team won with 31 points, ahead of Central Arkansas in second with 48 points and UTPA in third with 83 points. Houston Baptist (90 points) finished in fourth place, ahead of Rice (128 points), Texas Southern (171 points) and Prairie View (180 points).

The Islanders took four out of the top 10 spots in the women's 5k. Senior BreAnna Briggs led the women's team for the third straight race, finishing in second with a time of 18:12.7. Right behind Briggs was Cecilia Jones in third with a time of 18:43.9. Vanessa Galindo followed in sixth place, clocking a time of 19:09.4, improving her time of 19:29 from a year ago. Right behind Galindo was Jasmine Boutte, who also improved her time of 19:35 to 19:13.2 to place seventh. Rounding out the top five Islanders for the women was freshman Alexandra Fernandez in 16th place with a time of 19:46.9.

"The women's team did really well," Flanagan said. "Central Arkansas pushed them."

The No. 6 ranked men's team swept the Splash for the third straight year, edging Central Arkansas by one point. The Islanders took five of the top 10 spots in the men's 8k to finish with 30 points, ahead of Central Arkansas in second place with 31 points and UTPA in third with 104 points. Houston Baptist (112 points) followed in fourth place, ahead of Prairie View (121 points) and Texas Southern (132 points).  

Senior Patrick Kimeli paced the men's team in third place with a time of 26:07.0 and right behind Kimeli in fourth place was Philipp Baar with a time of 26:13.5, improving his time of 27:04, from a year ago. Paul Hansel was the next Islander to finish in sixth place with a time of 26:45.8, also improving his time of 26:59 from last year's Splash. Right behind Hansel was Adrian Marquez in seventh place with a time of 26:48.0. Rounding out the top five Islanders was Abel Koskey in 10th place. The sophomore clocked a time of 27:16.0 to edge Central Arkansas' James Leonard, who recorded a time of 27:19.3.   

"Central Arkansas gave us a big challenge," Flanagan added. "It was the best race I've seen them run. The team results could have gone either way. I was really pleased with how we did."

The Islanders Splash will conclude tomorrow with the high school and middle school divisions set to begin at 8 a.m. Full results will be posted on GoIslanders.com and here.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will be in action next when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark., to compete in the Chile Pepper Invitational on Sat., Oct. 13, at 9:45 a.m.
