Islanders Ranked in Top 10 of Latest USTFCCCA Regional Ranking
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi Women's Cross Country team moved up two spots in the NCAA South Central Regional poll today to break into the top 10. The men's team maintained its spot in sixth place and second in the Southland behind Lamar, who the Islanders will face Friday at the Rice Invitational.
"The Rice meet will be a very good one with most of the top 10 men's teams there as well as over half of the women's top 10 teams," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "So while I think the rankings are well deserved we will be put to the test on Friday to make sure they are deserved."
Both Islanders squads had the weekend off from competition but the women's team moved up two spots to No. 9 from last week's ranking. The Islanders hold the top spot in the Southland with Stephen F. Austin (No. 10), Sam Houston State (No. 11) and Lamar (No. 12) all sitting behind the Islanders in the regional poll.
The men's team stayed strong, holding the sixth spot in the South Central Regional poll and sit in second place in the Southland. The Islanders are behind six-time Southland Conference champion Lamar (No. 4), but sit ahead of McNeese State (No. 7) and Stephen F. Austin (No. 9).
In the Islanders first meet of the season on Fri., Aug. 31, both teams swept the top spots for the second straight year at the Rio Grande Valley Classic. The Islanders men's team sealed the top four spots while the women's team took the top three against Texas - Pan American.
The Islanders will next be in action on Fri., Sept. 14, in Houston, Texas, at the Rice Invite.
