Top Performance #2: Patrick Kimeli Wins Second-Straight Southland Cross Country Championship

Patrick Kimeli made history on Oct. 31 at the 2011 Southland Conference Cross Country Championships. The junior joined former Islander and current assistant coach Shadrack Songok as the only runners to win the individual 8k title consecutive years. Songok won the title in 2006 and 2007.

The native of Eldoret, Kenya, clinched his second consecutive Southland individual title in the 8k, finishing with a time of 24:50.6. Kimeli helped the team to a third-place finish in Nacogdoches, Texas, at the Piney Woods Country Club.

"Patrick had a superb race," Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "Once the Lamar guy went out Patrick set back on the pack. Matt Johnsen from Lamar, who beat Patrick in Austin, kept surging on him uphill and Patrick answered with some kicks at the end."
