Islanders Host Another Successful Year of Cross Country Camp
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi cross country team wrapped up another successful year of cross country camp at the Island University. The camp hosted 110 campers over the four-day event.
"This was a very good group of kids," Islanders Head Coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We got a lot of them excited about running. Some of them haven't done much running before and some were pretty well developed. I think they learned a lot about what it takes to be a good runner and then having Liza (Marie Hunter-Galvan) who is an Olympian, Shadrack (Songok) who is a three-time national champion and having the 10 counselors who are college runners there really exposed the campers to a higher level."
Camp Directors Flanagan, Randy Bungard and Songok along with counselors Hunter-Galvan, Steve Barlow, Steve McBride and student-athletes from the Islanders cross country team all taught campers how to get in excellent shape while enjoying the fun and camaraderie of training. The camp included both day campers and overnight campers who stayed in apartment dorms on campus.
The camp directors, counselors and staff presented lectures on the latest in running from training techniques, theories, nutrition, hydration, running footwear and training philosophies. Coach Bungard filmed each of the campers individually and analyzed each of their form.
Campers also worked out several times a day. On Friday, the campers ran the course at West Guth Park, the home of the Islander Splash, to experience up hill and down-hill running form. The following two days, the campers ran relay races at Lamar Park and long runs at Bob Hall Pier on Padre Island. Along with running, the campers took part in awesome abs and arm workouts, aerobic games on the intramural field and aqua jogging workouts in the recreational outdoor pool. During the evening, campers put together a talent show while all the counselors and staff served as judges and campers also took part in a scavenger hunt. At the end of the camp, certificates were given out and goals were established for the upcoming seasons.
"Hopefully they have been inspired to go out and put in the time and energy and effort it takes to be a better runner," Flanagan added.
