Cross Country/Track and Field Adds Three More to Class of 2012
CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi cross country and track and field teams have signed two more student-athletes to National Letters of Intent and one to scholarship, Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Shawn Flanagan announced today. Abel Koskey (Eldoret, Kenya/UTEP), Alexandra Fernandez (Corpus Christi/Carroll HS) and Kim Ward (Corpus Christi/Moody HS) will join the 2012 fall recruiting class.
"Abel comes with great credentials," Flanagan said. "He ran a 3:48.75 in the 1500 and sub 25 in the 8k while at UTEP. He should be able to contribute immediately. Alex made huge improvements and if she continues this trend, she will be able to also help immediately. Kim has some good potential. We just need to actualize it a little bit more."
Koskey is a transfer from UTEP and has signed a scholarship to join the Islanders cross country and track and field teams. Koskey will be a sophomore and joins Kimeli as a native of Eldoret, Kenya. Last season, he ran a personal-best 31:58.00 in the 10k at the Mountain Region Cross Country Championships to place in the top 50. At the Conference USA Championships, he placed 14th with a personal record of 24.36.60 in the 8k. In May of 2011, Koskey recorded personal-best records in the 1500m and 5000m at the Conference USA Championships. He placed sixth in the 1500m with a time of 3:48.75 and crossed the line in 11th place in the 5000m with a time of 14.49.83.
Fernandez comes to the Island University after running cross country and track and field at Carroll High School. During the 2012 track and field season, Fernandez claimed two first-place finishes and one third-place finish. At the District 28-5A Meet she won the 800m and the 1600m. She followed it by placing third in the 1600m at the Region 4-5A Meet. In 2010, she clocked a personal-best time of 12:32.90 in the two mile at the Region IV Championships.
Ward has spent the past four years at Moody High School where she earned Second Team All-State honors. In 2008, Ward set a personal-best time of 11:53.90 in the two mile at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Cross Country Championships to place 14th.
The three will join Regina Salinas (Corpus Christi/Incarnate Word), Samantha Hardin (Denison/ Montgomery) and Joel Gracia (La Joya/Juarez Lincoln), who signed with the Islanders in February for the Fall 2012 season.
