CORPUS CHRISTI – Junior Patrick Kimeli will conclude his junior year at the highest level on Monday, Nov. 21, when he competes at the 2011 NCAA Cross Country Championships at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, Ind. He is the sixth runner in the last seven years to represent the Islanders at the NCAA Championships. The men's 10k will begin at approximately 12:08 p.m. ET.
"We're hoping Patrick has a good day and an improvement from last year," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "We are going to have to work on him starting out slower than last year. He's feeling confident and has been running well, so we are optimistic for good results."
For the second straight year, Kimeli finished in seventh place in the men's 10k at the South Central Regional Championships to qualify for the NCAA National Championships. He posted a time of 30:55.9 to advance.
Last season Kimeli finished the NCAA 10k race in the top half of the field, in 104th place, with a time of 31:13.2. The Eldoret, Kenya, native ran in the top 15 during the first mile and clocked a time of 15:12 at the 5k mark. With 2k to go Kimeli had a time of 24:42 and finished with a final time of 31:13.2.
Individuals joining Kimeli out of the South Central Region are Eric Fernandez (Arkansas), Daniel Mutai (Louisiana-Monroe), Wesley Ruttoh (Houston) and Matt Johnsen (Lamar).
