Gonzalez Named SLC Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week

Official Southland Conference Release

FRISCO, Texas – Texas A&M – Corpus Christi sophomore Cecilia Gonzalez has been named the Women's Southland Conference Cross Country Athlete of the Week, the conference announced today.

"I think that speaks very highly of Cecy and her progress," head coach Shawn Flanagan said. "She is light-years ahead of where she was last year as a freshman. She is really running well and it bodes well for the future. Her hard work is paying off."

Gonzalez led the Islanders with a second-place finish at the Islander Splash in the women's 5k race on Friday. She clocked in with a time of 18:31, marking the best finish in her career. She finished four seconds short of Farah Madanay of Rice University.

The Corpus Christi, native led the Islanders to a runner-up team finish with 55 points, one spot behind Rice for the second week in a row, which took first with 29 points.

Gonzalez has made impressive strides in her two seasons. At the Splash she cut 25 seconds off her time and soared from fifth place to second in the last 800 meters of the race. Last season at the Splash, she finished in 14th place with a time of 18:56. At the Rice Invite, in the 4k, she clocked in a time of 14:53 to claim the 19th spot.

The runner-up finish helped the women's team hold the top spot in the Southland in the South Central Regional rankings at No. 7, behind No. 6 Rice.

This is Gonzalez's first Southland Conference weekly honor and the third for the Islanders this season. Kristine Burciaga and Patrick Kimeli have also garnered the honor.

On the men's side, freshman Angel Banda received honorable mention accolades for his second-place finish at the Islander Splash in the 8k. Banda led the men's team to their second consecutive Splash sweep and their first win of the season. The squad took four of the top 10 spots in the 8k race with Banda clinching the second-place slot with a time of 26:19.

The La Joya, Texas, native recorded his best finish of the season and finished eight seconds short of Mathew Kotut of Texas-Pan American, who finished as the top individual runner in the men's race.

The Islanders will travel to Austin, Texas, to compete in the University of Texas Rogue Runners Invite on Fri., Sept. 30, at 7:30 p.m.
