Kimeli finishes in top half of NCAA Championships field

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Patrick Kimeli competed on Monday at the 2010 NCAA Championships at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course on the ground of the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center. Kimeli finished 104th with a time of 31:13.2 in the 10K race.

Kimeli went out strong during the first mile to run among the top 15. At the 5K mark, his time was 15:12.

"Patrick really went for it with his start today during the first mile," said head coach Shawn Flanagan "This definitely was a positive learning experience for him which will help him in the future."

When Kimeli got to the 8K stretch, his time was 24:42 before finishing with his final time of 31:13.2.

"He finished right where I thought he would, but finishing in the top half after his quick start was great," said Flanagan "The experience that he gained today will be helpful should he get back in the next couple years which we hope he'll be able to."

Dorian Ulrey, Soloman Haile of Arkansas, David Rooney from McNeese State, Ryan Dohner of Texas were the only finishers in front of Kimeli from the South Central region.

The event wraps up a very successful season for Kimeli after winning the Southland Conference individual championship and becoming the third runner in Islanders history to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
