It's been over two weeks since the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi cross country teams competed at the Southland Conference Championships where the women's team finished second and the men placed fifth.
Both return to action this weekend, traveling to Waco for the NCAA South Central Regionals on Saturday. Baylor University will host the event at the Cottonwood Creek Golf Course.
Patrick Kimeli was the top individual finisher on the men's side in Beaumont, becoming the program's third top finisher at the conference championships joining Shadrack Songok and Anne Ronoh.
"I think Patrick (Kimeli) has a good chance to qualify as an individual for the nationals as does Julia (Sambu) and Sarah (Kimiayo)," said head coach Shawn Flanagan on getting individuals qualified this weekend for the NCAA Championships in Terra Haute, Ind.
Running Saturday at the NCAA South Central Regional for Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will be men's team members Kimeli, Ari Perez, Justin Adame, Scott Vance, Eloy Zertuche, Jason Garcia and Daniel Barlow.
The women's line-up is Sambu, Kimiayo, Kristine Torres, Courtney Johnson, Caitlin Arambula, Danielle Higgins and BreAnna Briggs.
It will be another opportunity for the Islanders to run against teams they are familiar with from within the region like Texas, Arkansas, Southland men's champion Lamar, McNeese State, Arkansas - Little Rock, Baylor, Texas A&M, Rice, UTSA and Stephen F. Austin who are in front of the men's team in the regional rankings.
Texas, Arkansas, Rice, Texas A&M, Southland women's champion Stephen F. Austin and Baylor rank ahead of the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi women in the South Central rankings and will provide a challenge for the team.
"Hopefully we'll run at or a little better than our rankings," said Flanagan "It would be good to see an improvement over how we raced against teams at the conference."Live stats will be available through the Baylor Bears athletics web site at http://www.deltatiming.com/results/xcmeet.aspx?yf=2010&mf=ncaa-xc-south-central-region
