Islanders have strong showing at annual Chile Pepper Festival

Fayetteville, Ark. - Texas A&M - Corpus Christi cross country teams competed at the 22nd annual Chile Pepper Festival on Saturday. The Islanders women finished sixth out of 56 teams with the men coming in 13th out of 50.

For the A&M - Corpus Christi women's team the sixth place finish was their best at the event, and was the top Southland school. Teams they finished in front of were Wyoming, Arkansas, McNeese State, Oklahoma, Tulane, SMU, TCU, UT Arlington, UTSA, Auburn and LSU.

Sarah Kimiayo was the Islanders top finisher coming in 28th with a time of 17:31.64, Julia Sambu had a time of 17:48.08, Courtney Johnson ran a 18:00.57 time.

BreAnna Briggs clocked in at 18:20.07, Danielle Higgins 18:22.37, Kristine Torres 18:35.81, Caitlin Arambula 18:38.08 and Cecilia Gonzalez 19:10.72.

"Sarah and Danielle ran well today on the girls side which was good to see," said head coach Shawn Flanagan, "I think this race shows and gives the team confidence that we can run with anyone if you look at some of the schools we we're in front of today.

"Our team took some big steps today before conference meet."

On the men side the Islanders were 13th finishing in front of name schools such as Auburn, TCU, LSU, and Tulsa.

Patrick Kimeli again was the top runner for A&M-Corpus Christi with a time of 30:18.16, Ari Perez 31:41.36, Daniel Barlow 32:15.96.

Eloy Zertuche came in at 32:18.58, Justin Adame 32:21.57 and Adrian Marquez 33:18.72.

"Patrick did what was expected him to do," said Flanagan "We just need to get ourselves healthy before the conference meet but we're got 12 days to be able to do that."
