Cross Country sweeps Islanders Splash, Kimeli finishes first for men

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's cross country teams returned to action Friday night at the annual Islanders Splash with a sweep. Patrick Kimeli was first the first overall finisher on the men's side, Julia Sambu was second overall for the women as both helped their teams to first place finishes.

In helping the men to a team win Kimeli finished with a time of 25:26 in the 8K race to lead all runners, he finished just in front of former Islanders runner Shadrack Songok who ran unattached. Scott Vance was fifth 26:12, Ari Perez seventh 26:45.

A&M-Corpus Christi next pack of runners took 10th-12th place as Adrian Marquez was 10th at 27:00, Justin Adame 27:02 and Daniel Barlow 27:06.

Brandon Steed was 25th at 28:32, Jason Garcia came in at 32nd 28:49 and Jacob Abrego finished 42nd with a time of 29:50.

"Patrick and Scott each had good races for us tonight," said head coach Shawn Flanagan "We had guys like Justin Adame, Adrian Marquez pick it up also in this race."

The women had seven of the top 11 finishers in route to the team victory with Sambu leading the way, with a second place finish and time of 17:48. Sarah Kimaiyo was third 17:55, Courtney Johnson was fifth 18:16.

BreAnna Briggs came in seventh at 18:23, Kristine Torres was ninth 18:36, Dani Higgins 10th 18:43, Caitlin Arambula 18:46 behind her in 11th.

Cecilia Gonzalez was 14th 18:56, Melissa Jones 16th 19:02, Dani Prado 19:43 came in 25th, Shelby Nichols 28th 19:51, Brenna Pelzel 41st 20:58 and Cara Patterson 57th with a time of 22:59.

"Our women are closing the gap and I'm pleased with the progress we're making," said Flanagan "Both teams did good things which is encouraging going forward."

The Islanders cross country teams won't return to action until Oct. 16 when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark. for the annual Chile Pepper Festival.
