CROSS COUNTRY SIGNS TWO LOCAL RUNNERS
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi director of track and field/cross country head coach Shawn Flanagan announced the signing of two runners from right in the Islanders own backyard. Two runners from Carroll High School Justin Adame and Cecilla Gonzalez will join the team in the fall.
"We are very pleased to have signed these two very fine athletes from Carroll. They are both outstanding in cross country and track. I expect them to have an immediate positive impact on the cross country team next fall," said Flanagan.
Adame comes to the Island with many accolades having earned Caller-Times Runner-of-the-Year in boys' cross country as a senior. He also won the District 27-5A individual championship and finished fourth in the Region IV-5A meet. He capped the year with a 24th-place finish at the state meet. His previous two state meets he finished 11th as a junior and 14th his sophomore year.
Gonzalez was named the Caller-Times Runner-of-the-Year in girls' cross country after she repeated as District 27-5A individual champion. She finished 15th at regional's and 43rd at the state meet.
"It's very pleasing when you are able to recruit within Corpus Christi, this will help make the transition to college much easier for them. We also have the additional benefit of both being coached by two outstanding high school coaches in Coach Traci Jensen with Cecci and Coach Robert Arredondo with Justin. Both of have had many athletes successfully make the transition from high school to college competition," added Flanagan. "This is very much a win-win situation."
