ISLANDERS HAVE GOOD SHOWING AT CHILE PEPPER FESTIVAL
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country teams traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas for the annual Chile Pepper Festival. Both teams had top 15 finishes with the women coming in at ninth place out of 34 teams and the men placing 12 out of 29 teams.
Top finishers were Anne Ronoh who came in at 15 with a time of 21:34.28 for the women and Patrick Kimeli finished with a time of 30:44.81 good for 22 place.
On the women's side the Islanders cracked the top ten at the Chile Pepper for the first time in program's history. A&M-Corpus Christi in an impressive field was the highest Southland Conference school in the meet.
Ronoh was 15, BreAnna Briggs finished 63, Sarah De Los Santos was 69, Courtney Johnson was 75, Sheila Salil 90, Caitlin Arambula 97, Kristine Torres 124, Daniela Prado 167 and Faith Barlow didn't finish. Lillian Badaru of Texas Tech won with the time of 20:31.52.
"This was the first time the women have cracked the top 10 at this meet which will look as a good omen heading into the conference meet in two weeks," said cross country head coach Shawn Flanagan.
For the men they finished in the top 15 in a highly competitive meet with several teams in the region, and conference.
Finishes for the Islander men were Kimeli at 22, Ari Perez 61, Scott Vance 66, Eloy Zertuche 71, Daniel Barlow 91, Curtis Patton 108 and Kirk Dalhiem did not finish.
"We has a gap between our runners today but if we can work on that I think we can do well moving forward," said Flanagan "If we are able to get healthy we should be able to get rolling at the conference meet coming up.
Both teams are off until Oct. 31 when Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hosts the 2009 Southland Conference Championship at West Guth Park.
