COLLEGE STATION - Texas A&M-Corpus Christi was scheduled to compete in the Texas A&M Invite but heavy rains on Friday presented unsafe conditions cancelling the race.

Despite the soggy conditions the show would still go on as TAMUCC, UTSA, Texas State, Houston Baptist and Texas-Pan America put together an impromptu race deemed the Brazos Open that took place at Central Park in College Station.

On the women's side, the Islanders flexed their depth placing six in the top ten and eight of the top 20 finishers in the race. Coming in first for the Islanders was Sarah De Los Santos with a time of 19:03 which was good for third overall in the race.

Coming in fourth through sixth were BreAnna Briggs, Shelby Nichols, Melissa Jones. Rounding out the top 10 were Sheila Salil who finished eight and Faith Barlow who came in at number 10. Seniors Meghan Lemke and Anne Ronoh were held out due to the wet conditions, Caitlin Arambula started but did not finish.

"Our girls ran very well on a soft and wet course, the freshmen performed really well this morning in their first individual race. Everyone ran well despite the situation that we were in, I'm happy with how the women are starting to show some positives," said cross country head coach Shawn Flanagan.

For the men, Jordan Valle who was part of the Southland Conference runner of the week duo came in with the best overall time at 21:25, right next to TAMUCC graduate assistant Shadrack Songok who ran unattached. The next highest finish was by Patrick Kemei who finished 10th. Five Islanders finished 11, 15, 17, 18 and 20 to make up the next 10 spots.

For the overall standings, A&M-Corpus Christi finished in third place behind UTSA and Houston Baptist.

"Jordan looked really good today considering the running conditions and I am proud of what he accomplished today. Other guys also ran well with how wet the course was this morning," said Flanagan "We have things that we can build on for this weekend to help us move forward from here but with how wet and rainy I'm fairly pleased with our effort."

The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country teams will not compete until Friday, Sept 25 at the annual Islander Splash Collegiate Races held at West Guth Park starting at 6 p.m.
