Texas A&M-Corpus Christi cross country athlete Anne Ronoh won the Southland Conference Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week award on the strength of her performance at the prestigious Chile Pepper Festival event held at the University of Arkansas.
The Athlete of the Week honor is the first this year for Ronoh as well as the first overall for TAMUCC.
Ronoh finished the 6K event in a time of 20:59, marking the first time a women's competitor has ever gone under 21 minutes for the Islanders.
"Anne ran very well in a tough field." said Islander head coach Shawn Flanagan. "I was extremely pleased with what turned out to be a historic performance."
With her school-record time, Ronoh finished the event in 14th place, enough to lead the Islanders to a 17th place finish. The Islanders finished ahead of notable teams such as TCU, Tulane, Nebraska and LSU.
Male athlete of the week honors went to Lamar's Samuel Kosgei after he finished second in the men's division of the Chile Pepper Festival event.
The Islanders have this week off and will next compete in the Southland Conference Cross Country meet to be held November 3rd on the campus of Stephen F. Austin.
