The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's and women's cross country teams host the annual Islander Splash this Friday and Saturday at West Guth Park. The collegiate races will be on Friday with high schools and middle schools Saturday.
The collegiate races will begin the women's teams running three miles at 6 p.m. and the men to follow at 6:30 p.m. as they cover a 5-mile circuit. Joining the Islander runners in both races will be UTSA, Central Arkansas, Texas-Pan American, Monterrey Tech, and Texas A&M-Kingsville. St. Mary's (Texas) will send only a women's team.
"I think we have a good shot at both titles," said Islander cross country head coach Shawn Flanagan. "Anne Ronoh finished second last weekend to UTSA's Dana Mecke on her home course. I am hoping that we are able to reverse the table this weekend on our home course. Anne has been at front of our women early on, but we have several women running well and I was pleased with how we did last week."
The men will be making their regular-season debut.
"The men have been running well in practice," said the Islander coach. "Several guys have all been turning in good times. Scott Vance, Erik Burciaga, Ari Perez, Kirk Dalheim, Edward Kemei and Paul Keter have been training hard and turning in strong times.
"I expect UTPA to give us a challenge after winning the UTSA meet last week. I am also interested to see how we fair against conference rivals UTSA and Central Arkansas.
"The meet will be another step as we prepare for the conference championships in October."
On Saturday, over 2,600 high school and middle school runners are slated to compete. The races begin with middle school races starting at 8:20. The final race of the day will be at 11:20.
