Top Moment #5: Volleyball Makes History with First SLC Tournament Win

The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball team had an historic 2013 season with a final regular season record of 19-11. Ivy Baresh and Logen Bourque were named First Team All-Southland Conference and Brianna Brink earned honorable mention accolades for the second year in a row.

Heading into the Southland Conference Tournament, the Islanders were ranked 25th in the nation in digs (16.79) and 33rd in the nation in assists (13.05), both putting the Islanders at second in the conference. The Islanders also sat in third place in the conference with 13.71 kills per set.

With such impeccable performances throughout the year, the Islanders looked to continue their success in the postseason after earning a spot in the conference tournament for their second consecutive year and their third overall trip.

In the opening round of the tournament, the Islanders were set to take on their rivals, Sam Houston State, following a victory against the Bearkats earlier in the week in the final regular-season match.

The first set featured three lead changes, including a six-point run by the Islanders to take the set, 25-23. The Bearkats weren't going down without a fight though. In the second set, both teams fought hard through 13 ties and three lead changes before Sam Houston emerged victorious, 27-25.

In the third set, the Islanders took an early 7-4 lead before the Bearkats went on a 3-0 run to tie the set at 7-7. From there it was back and forth until they evened the match at 22-22. It was then that Brink stepped up with two consecutive kills and the Islanders went on to win, 25-23.

In the fourth set, the Islanders were explosive, hitting .268 and limiting the Bearkats to just .179 hitting. The set featured three lead changes that ended with Baresh and Brink once again hitting consecutive kills to pad the Islanders' lead to 21-18. After Sam Houston State cut the Islanders' lead to one, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi capped the set with three straight points to make history by winning their first ever Southland Conference Tournament match, 25-21.
