2014 Islanders Volleyball Schedule (PDF)

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will look to build off an impressive 2013 season starting with a road-heavy start to the 2014 season. The Islanders will play their first 11 matches on the road before hosting the three-day Islanders Classic. The team will play a total of 33 matches in the regular season, including 13 home matches at the Dugan Wellness Center.

The Islanders will open the season in Waco, Texas, at the two-day Baylor Invite starting on Aug. 29, against Portland. A&M-Corpus Christi will then wrap the first weekend of play against the Bears and Abilene Christian on Aug. 30. The team will continue their tournament schedule with three matches in Edinburg, Texas, at the Texas-Pan American Tournament. The first match is slated for Sept. 4, against the Broncs, with the Islanders set to finish the tournament on Sept. 5, against Northern Arizona and Texas Tech.

After a night match at Rice (Sept. 9), the Islanders will trek to California for their first trip to the Pacific Coast under head coach Tony Graystone, for the Long Beach State/Loyola Marymount Tournament. The Islanders will face St. Mary's and LMU on Sept. 12, before taking on The Beach and Northern Colorado on Sept. 13.

The team will return home to play host to the Islanders Classic on Sept. 18-20, with a total of five teams set to compete in the Coastal Bend. The home opener will feature a night match between the Islanders and Southland foe Incarnate Word on Sept. 18. The Classic will continue on Sept. 19 with five matches scheduled in the Dugan. A&M-Corpus Christi will open the second day of competition against Nebraska-Omaha before wrapping the day with a 7 p.m. match against Houston. The Islanders close out play in the event against UTPA and Boise State on Sept. 20.

Following the Classic, the Islanders will conclude their pre-conference schedule with a Monday night match on Sept. 22 at Texas A&M, which advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament last season. The Islanders will then open their 16-match Southland Conference schedule against Southeastern La. (Sept. 25) and New Orleans (Sept. 27).

A&M-Corpus Christi will play eight Southland matches in the Dugan starting with a three-match homestand against Houston Baptist (Oct. 4), Stephen F. Austin (Oct. 9) and Northwestern State (Oct. 11). After a two-match road swing at Incarnate Word (Oct. 16) and Abilene Christian (Oct. 18), the Islanders will return home for three matches. First up is a Tuesday night match against defending Southland Conference champion Central Arkansas on Oct. 21. The Islanders will then host Nicholls (Oct. 23) and McNeese State (Oct. 25) before heading on the road for the final time for their next four matches.

The team will first travel to Lamar (Oct. 30) before traveling to Sam Houston State (Nov. 1). The Islanders will then play their next four opponents for the second time starting on Nov. 4 at HBU. The team will conclude their roadtrip in Conway, Ark., against the Sugar Bears (Nov. 8), before hosting the Bearkats (Nov. 13) and Cardinals (Nov. 15) at the Dugan. The Islanders will honor seniors Brianna Brink and Ashley Phelps on Nov. 15 prior to the match as part of the Senior Day festivities.

Following the regular season, the 2014 Southland Conference Tournament will be hosted by Northwestern State in Natchitoches, La. on Nov. 21-23. Last season, the Islanders made history by advancing to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time.

The Islanders return three starters and seven letterwinners from last season's team that finished with a 20-12 record, including a school-best 13-5 record in Southland Conference play. In addition to 11 newcomers, the team returns First Team All-Southland player Ivy Baresh, along with Brink, who received Honorable Mention All-Southland honors, and Phelps, who was named the Islanders Volleyball Scholar-Athlete.
