Islanders Continue Homestand Saturday against McNeese State

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will continue its Southland Conference homestand on Saturday, Nov. 2, when it host McNeese State in the Dugan Wellness Center at 1 p.m. The Islanders topped the Cowgirls 3-0 in the first meeting in Lake Charles, La., and will come into the contest with a 16-10 record including a school-best 10-4 record in the Southland Conference.

The Islanders are coming off a 3-0 sweep over Nicholls Thursday night. Ivy Baresh powered the offense with her 14th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 13 digs while three other Islanders finished in double figures in kills. Shaquinn Parker, Brianna Brink and Haley Satterwhite Day all posted 10 kills apiece. The Islanders' defense also put together a solid performance with 54 digs. Along with Baresh's 13 digs, Shayla Maldonado added 13 and Hailey King collected 10. 

Logen Bourque had another impressive match against the Colonels with 38 assists to go along with three blocks, five kills and four digs. The senior continues to be an offensive spark for the Islanders' offense and is currently ranked 20th in the nation in assists with 11.29 per set, which is good for second place in the conference. She is the first Islander to reach 4,000 assists in a career with 4,279. Bourque has tallied 50 or more assists in seven matches this season. The Houston native is fourth in the Islanders' record book in career digs with 1,037 and currently has sole possession of fourth place with 73 career service aces.

As a team, the Islanders are ranked 26th in the nation in digs with 16.66 per set, which is good for second place in the conference. The Islanders are ranked 31st in assists with 13.09 per set, which is also good for second place in the conference. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi sits in third place in the conference in kills with 13.76. Baresh leads the Islanders with 3.49 kills per set, which is good for sixth place in the conference. The sophomore ranks 13th in digs with 3.64 and 11th in service aces. Ashley Phelps is right behind Baresh on the team with 3.13 kills per set while Brink is averaging 3.04 kills per set (11th SLC). 

Defensively, King and Maldonado have powered the team. King is averaging 3.69 digs per set (11th SLC) with 317 digs on the year and Maldonado is averaging 4.47 digs per set in conference play, which ranks eighth in conference matches only.

McNeese State enters Saturday's match with a 14-13 record including a 6-7 record in conference play. The Cowgirls are coming off a 3-1 loss to Houston Baptist on Thursday. Prior to that, McNeese State won two straight against Alcorn State and Nicholls. Malina Sanchez leads the Cowgirls with 3.80 kills per set while Vanessa Bentley runs the offense with 9.07 assists per set. Kara Rockey (2.83 digs per set), Sanchez (2.65 digs per set) and Kaylen Wolfe (2.64 digs per set) lead the Cowgirls' defense.

Saturday's match will mark the 10th meeting between the two schools with the Cowgirls holding the slight 5-4 series advantage. In the first meeting, Baresh led the Islanders to a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-21, 25-20) with 12 kills on .333 hitting and Brink slammed down 11 kills on .450 hitting. Bourque propelled the Islanders' offense with 35 assists and the Islanders' defense came up big with Bourque, King and Megan Olivarez all finishing with eight digs apiece.

The Islanders will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 9, when they host Houston Baptist at the Dugan Wellness Center. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
