Colonels Up Next For Islanders Volleyball

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will face Nicholls for the second time this season on Thursday, Oct. 31, at the Dugan Wellness Center. The Islanders topped the Colonels 3-0 in the first match and will come into the contest with a 15-10 record including a 9-4 record in the Southland Conference.

The Islanders are coming off a sweep of Prairie View A&M Tuesday night in non-conference play. Haley Satterwhite Day powered the Islanders' offense with eight kills while Ivy Baresh and Brianna Brink each chipped in seven kills apiece. Logen Bourque recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a match-high 44 assists and 10 digs. Shayla Maldonado propelled the defense with 15 digs and Baresh added 11 digs. Freshmen Shaquinn Parker and Morgan Carlson tallied four block assists apiece to help the Islanders out-block the Lady Panthers 8-3.

Bourque continues to be an offensive spark for the Islanders' offense. As of Monday, the senior ranked 28th in the nation in assists, which is good for second place in the conference. She is the first Islander to reach 4,000 assists in a career with 4,241. Bourque has tallied 50 or more assists in seven matches this season. The Houston native is fourth in the Islanders' record book in career digs with 1,033 and currently has sole possession of fourth place with 72 career service aces.

The Islanders currently sit in second place in the conference in assists (13.04) and digs (16.62) and third in kills (13.65). Baresh leads the Islanders with 3.47 kills per set, which is good for sixth place in the conference. The sophomore ranks 13th in digs with 3.62 and 12th in service aces. Ashley Phelps is right behind Baresh on the team with 3.13 kills per set while Brink is averaging 3.03 kills per set (12th SLC). Hailey King and Maldonado have powered the team defensively. King is averaging 3.70 digs per set (12th SLC) with 307 digs on the year and Maldonado is averaging 4.48 digs per set in conference play, which ranks eighth in conference matches only.

Nicholls enters Thursday's match with a 5-18 record including a 2-11 record in conference play. The Colonels are on a six-match losing streak and have conference wins over New Orleans and Southeastern La. Kayla Burling leads the Colonels with 3.56 kills per set while Kayla Mashburn is right behind her with 3.11 kills per set. Alyse Barclay (5.04 assists per set), Marlee Bean (4.51 assists per set) and Ainsley Marroccoli (4.12 assists per set) all help run the Colonels' offense. Defensively, Kalynn Egea leads the team with 4.07 digs per set.

Thursday's match will mark the 10th meeting between the two schools with the Islanders holding the 8-1 series advantage. The Islanders have won six straight matches over the Colonels from 2009-13. Earlier this month, the Islanders swept the Colonels 3-0 (26-24, 25-9, 25-18) on the road. Baresh led the Islanders with 15 kills, 18 digs and two service aces while Sarah Sanchez registered a career-high six blocks and added eight kills on an impressive .412 hitting. Bourque passed the 4,000-assist career mark against the Colonels after she dished out 36 assists.

The Islanders will host the McNeese State Cowgirls next on Saturday, Nov. 2. First serve is set for 1 p.m. at the Dugan Wellness Center.
