Volleyball Set to Host Prairie View A&M Tuesday in Non-Conference Match

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team is looking to snap a three-match losing streak Tuesday, Oct. 29 when it returns to the Dugan Wellness Center to host Prairie View A&M in a non-conference match. The Islanders come into the contest against the Lady Panthers with an overall 14-10 record.
After a tough road swing against Oral Roberts and Central Arkansas, the Islanders are ranked 31st in digs and 39th in assists in the nation. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi dropped a 3-2 loss to Oral Roberts before falling 3-1 to Central Arkansas.
Ashley Phelps propelled the Islanders' offense against the Sugar Bears with a career-high 21 kills and four Islanders finished in double figures in digs. After UCA captured the first two sets, the Islanders battled back to win the third set before dropping an intense fourth set. The match featured 27 ties and 11 lead changes. Shaquinn Parker recorded 11 kills and five block assists while Logen Bourque registered her ninth double-double of the season with 43 assists and 13 digs. Ivy Baresh led the Islanders' defense with 15 digs while Shayla Maldonado added 14 and Megan Olivarez chipped in 11.
Bourque continues to be a leader for the Islanders' offense. The senior is ranked 28th in the nation in assists with 11.13 assists per set, which is good for second place in the conference. She is the first Islander to reach 4,000 assists in a career with 4,197. Bourque has tallied 50 or more assists in seven matches this season. The Houston native is fourth in the Islanders' record book in career digs with 1,023 and is currently tied for fourth in service aces with 71.
The Islanders currently sit in second place in the conference in assists (12.93) and digs (16.52) and third in kills (13.54). Baresh is ranked sixth in the conference with 3.47 kills per set and 13th in digs with 3.57. The sophomore is also ranked 11th in service aces. Phelps is right behind Baresh with 3.08 kills per set (11th SLC) while Brianna Brink is averaging 3.02 kills per set (13th SLC). Hailey King and Maldonado have powered the team defensively. King is averaging 3.73 digs per set (11th SLC) with 302 digs on the year and Maldonado is averaging 3.16 digs per set, which ranks eighth in conference matches only.
Prairie View A&M enters Tuesday's match with a 9-22 record. The Lady Panthers have victories over Southern (3), Huston-Tillotson (2), Grambling State (3) and Alcorn State (1). Magda Zietek leads the team with 2.53 kills per set and Kelsey Espinosa runs the offense with 6.93 assists per set. Defensively, LaKeisha Allen leads the Lady Panthers with 2.51 digs per set.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will meet Prairie View A&M for the 17th time in program history, with the Islanders holding the 15-1 series advantage. Last season, the Islanders swept the Lady Panthers, 3-0 in Prairie View, Texas. Bourque led the Islanders with 24 assists and seven digs while Brink chipped in seven kills and Phelps added five.
The Islanders will continue play at home Thursday, Oct. 31, when it host Nicholls in conference play. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
