TULSA, Okla. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team suffered a devastating 3-2 loss (16-25, 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-5) to Oral Roberts Thursday evening at the Aerobics Center. Ivy Baresh and Logen Bourque both finished with a double-double to lead the Islanders.
The Islanders (14-9, 9-3 SLC) clinched the first two sets before the Golden Eagles (16-4, 8-2 SLC) rallied back to seal the final three sets. Baresh recorded her 13th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 17 digs. Bourque also finished with a double-double with 56 assists, just three short of tying her all-time high, and added 16 digs for the Islanders' defense. Brianna Brink registered a season-high 21 kills and Ashley Phelps added 16 kills. Shayla Maldonado tacked on 18 digs for the Islanders' defense.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi came out strong in the first set with an early 7-3 lead and held the lead through the whole set. The Islanders put together a 3-0 run to build a 14-9 lead before the Golden Eagles trimmed the deficit to two at 14-12. The Islanders however built an eight-point cushion with five straight points. After consecutive points by ORU, the Islanders capped the first set with a 4-1 run to win 25-16.
The Islanders carried over its momentum into the second set to win 25-23. The second set featured seven ties and three lead changes. The Islanders took an early 8-5 lead before ORU evened the set at 13-13. Both teams rallied back and forth before the Islanders pulled ahead 22-21 on a 4-0 run. During the run, Phelps hit back-to-back kills and Brink added an ace. Oral Roberts followed with a kill, but the Islanders earned straight points to take a 24-22 lead. After a point by ORU, Baresh capped the set with a kill to give the Islanders a 2-0 lead in the match.
Oral Roberts came out of the break to win the next three sets and the match. The Islanders led early with a 13-11 lead after straight kills by Baresh and Brink and a Golden Eagles' error. The Islanders and Golden Eagles rallied back and forth until the Islanders took an 18-16 lead after a kill by Bourque. After trading points, the Islanders saw its lead evaporate as Oral Roberts went on an 8-0 run to win 25-19.
In the fourth set, the Islanders took a 7-3 lead to force Oral Roberts to call a timeout. The Islanders then built a 16-6 lead with four straight points. The Golden Eagles followed with a 5-0 run to pull within five. Brink answered with a kill to pad the Islanders' lead to six. However, the Golden Eagles soared back with eight consecutive points to take a 20-17 lead. Brink put down a kill but a 5-2 run by ORU would capture the set at 25-20.
Oral Roberts opened the fifth set with a 6-0 lead and went on to win 15-5 to clinch the match.
The Islanders will continue play on the road in its final away match of the season, when it travels to Conway, Ark. to take on Central Arkansas on Saturday, Oct. 26. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
