CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will embark on its final road trip of the season when it takes on Oral Roberts on Thursday, Oct. 24 and Central Arkansas on Saturday, Oct. 26 in Southland Conference play. The Islanders come into Thursday's contest against the Golden Eagles with a school best 9-2 record in conference play.
The Islanders jumped up four spots to 24th in the nation in digs with 16.69 and are now 31st in the nation in assists with 13.03. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi picked up a 3-1 victory over Stephen F. Austin on Thursday before dropping 3-0 loss to Northwestern State on Saturday. Prior to that, the Islanders won seven straight matches.
Ivy Baresh recorded her 12th double-double of the season on Saturday with 10 kills and 12 digs while Brianna Brink also collected 10 kills for the Islanders' offense. Logen Bourque tallied her seventh double-double of the season with 33 assists and 10 digs. Shayla Maldonado powered the defense with 20 digs and Hailey King chipped in 12.
Bourque continues to move up in the NCAA rankings in assists. The senior is now 25th in the nation with 11.15 assists (2nd SLC). She reached a new milestone last week after dishing out 121 assists in three matches. She is the first Islander to reach 4,000 assists in a career with 4,098. Bourque has tallied 50 or more assists in six matches this season. The Houston native is fourth in the Islanders record book in career digs with 994 and is currently tied for fourth in service aces with 71.
The Islanders currently sit in second place in the conference in assists (13.02) and digs (16.69) and third in kills (13.62). Baresh is ranked fourth in the conference with 3.63 kills per set and 15th in digs with 3.58. The sophomore is also ranked 15th in service aces. Brink is right behind Baresh offensively with 3.03 kills per set (12th SLC) and 239 total kills. King and Maldonado have powered the team defensively. King is averaging 4.03 digs per set (9th SLC) with 290 digs on the year and Maldonado is averaging 3.09 digs per set.
Oral Roberts enters Thursday's match with a 15-4 record including a 7-2 record in conference play. The Golden Eagles have won seven of its last nine matches, including its last two conference matches. Oral Roberts is coming off back-to-back sweeps of Nicholls and McNeese State on the road. Sara Pope leads the Golden Eagles with 3.78 kills per set and Laura Taylor runs the offense with 10.36 assists per set. Defensively, Bruna Silva leads the team with 4.99 digs per set and Jessica Pancratz is averaging 1.08 blocks per set.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will meet the Golden Eagles for just the fourth time in program history, with Oral Roberts holding the 2-1 series advantage. Last season, the Islanders clinched a 3-0 victory at home in the first meeting before dropping a 3-0 loss to the Golden Eagles in Tulsa, Okla. The Islanders then faced Oral Roberts in the quarterfinal round of the Southland Conference Tournament. The Golden Eagles captured a 3-0 victory to end the season.
The Islanders will conclude conference road action Saturday, Oct. 26 when it travels to Conway, Ark. to take on Central Arkansas. First serve is set for 12 p.m.
