THIBODAUX, La. – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team cruised to its sixth straight conference victory of the season with a 3-0 win (26-24, 25-9, 25-18) over Nicholls Monday evening at Stopher Gym. Ivy Baresh powered the Islanders, who have clinched 10 of its last 11 matches, with her 10th double-double of the season.
Baresh, who was named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week today, recorded 15 kills, 18 digs and two service aces to lead the Islanders (13-7, 8-1 SLC) over the Colonels (5-15, 2-8 SLC). Sarah Sanchez registered a career-high six blocks, including four block assists and two blocks solos. The senior also chipped in eight kills on an impressive .412 hitting.
Senior Logen Bourque reached a new milestone tonight after passing out 36 assists. Last season at home against the Colonels, Bourque became the first Islander to reach 3,000 assists in a career. This season, she becomes the first Islander to reach 4,000 assists in a career with 4,013 with 10 regular-season matches left to play. Along with Sanchez, Shayla Maldonado helped power the Islanders' defense with 11 digs, her third straight match in double figures. The sophomore was tabbed the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week today.
The Islanders jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the first set and extended its lead to 19-13 on a kill by Haley Satterwhite Day and a Colonels' hitting error. Nicholls rallied back with a 4-1 run to pull within one at 22-21. After an Islanders' timeout, the Islanders pushed its lead back to two on a Nicholls' error, but straight points by the Colonels evened the set at 23-23. Both teams traded kills, before the Islanders closed the set on back-to-back Colonels' errors to win 26-24. The Islanders hit .130 in the set and limited the home team to just .073 hitting. Baresh led the set with six kills while Bourque dished out 13 assists.
In the second set, it was all Islanders from the start. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi opened with a 10-4 lead and built its biggest lead of the set at 20-8 on a 3-0 run. During the run, Sanchez tallied a kill and Nicholls committed back-to-back attacking errors. After a Colonels' point, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi scored five straight points to seal the second set 25-9. During the run, Baresh and Shaquinn Parker each put down a kill and Sanchez tallied an ace. The Islanders hit a set-high .318 while holding Nicholls to -.280. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi out-blocked the Colonels 5-1.
The Islanders kept the momentum rolling into the third set. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi jumped out to a 13-4 lead and maintained the lead through the whole set. The Islanders padded its lead to 21-14 on a 5-0 run after three Colonels' mishaps, an ace by Hailey King and a kill by Sanchez. After a point by Nicholls, Baresh hit consecutive kills to put the Islanders ahead by eight. The Colonels answered with three straight points before the Islanders won the set at 25-18 and the match 3-0. In the third set, the Islanders hit .150 behind Baresh's five kills. King recorded all eight of her digs in the third set to lead the Islanders' defense.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi hit .176 in the match and limited the Colonels to .000 hitting. The Islanders also registered seven blocks.
The Islanders will return home to host Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, Oct. 17, in the annual Dig Pink match at the Dugan Wellness Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the first 300 fans will receive a free t-shirt.
