Islanders Set to Wrap Louisiana Road Trip Monday at Nicholls

CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will conclude its road swing in Louisiana on Monday, Oct. 14, when it takes on Nicholls in Thibodaux, La. The Islanders are coming off a 3-1 victory over Southeastern La. and have won five straight, including nine of its last 10 matches.

The Islanders are off to the best Southland Conference start in program history with a 7-1 record including a 12-7 overall record. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will meet the Colonels for the ninth time in program history. The Islanders currently sits behind undefeated Central Arkansas (7-0) in the conference standings and is tied with Sam Houston State (7-1).

Sophomores Ivy Baresh and Shayla Maldonado both had a career afternoon Saturday against Southeastern La. to lead the Islanders to a 3-1 victory (25-17, 28-30, 25-13, 25-10). Baresh picked up her ninth double-double of the season with a career-high 21 kills on .311 hitting and matched a career-high 22 digs. She also tied a career-high three service aces while Maldonado had another impressive match in the libero position. The Katy, Texas native registered a career-high 34 digs, just three digs short of tying the all-time single match record for a four-set match. She also chipped in two of the Islanders season match-high nine service aces. Maladonado and Baresh had a combined 56 of the Islanders' season-match high 93 digs in the victory.

Texas A&M - Corpus Christi currently leads the conference in assists with 13.01 per set, which as of Friday ranked 33rd in the nation. The Islanders are second in the conference in digs with 16.24 per set and currently sits in third place in the conference in kills with 13.69 per set.

Senior Logen Bourque dished out 51 assists on Saturday for the second straight game and it marked the fifth time this season where she has tallied 50 or more assists in a match. Prior to Saturday's match, the Houston native was ranked 36th in the nation in assists per set. She leads the conference in conference matches only with 11.90 assists per set and overall she ranks second in the conference with 11.01 assists per set. Bourque has collected 771 assists this season for a total of 3,977 assists in her career.

Baresh has been a consistent all-around player for the Islanders. The sophomore leads the Islanders' offense this season with 3.59 kills per set (4th SLC) and is second on the team in digs with 3.43 digs per set (15th SLC). Baresh has also registered a team-high 19 service aces. She is ranked 15th in the conference with 0.28 service aces per set. Brianna Brink is right behind Baresh offensively with 2.99 kills per set (15th SLC) and 206 total kills.

Along with Maldonado, Hailey King powers the team defensively with 3.95 digs per set (9th SLC) and 257 digs on the year. Parker is leading the Islanders at the net with 39 total blocks this season, including 32 block assists.

Nicholls enters Monday's match with a 5-14 record including a 2-7 record in conference play. The Colonels are coming off back-to-back conference losses to Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State. On Saturday, Nicholls dropped a 3-1 loss to the Lady Demons on the road. Prior to that, the Colonels picked up two wins against New Orleans and Southeastern La. at home. Kayla Burling leads the Colonels with 3.33 kills per set while Kayla Mashburn is right behind her with 3.12 kills per set. Marlee Bean (4.65 assists per set), Alyse Barclay (4.43 assists per set) and Ainsley Marroccoli (4.27 assists per set) all help run the Colonels' offense. Defensively, Kalynn Egea leads the team with 4.18 digs per set.

Monday's match will mark the ninth meeting between the two schools with the Islanders holding the 7-1 series advantage. The Islanders have won five straight matches over the Colonels from 2009-12 with the last two coming last season. In the first meeting, the Islanders sealed a 3-0 victory in Thibodaux and followed it with a 3-1 win in Corpus Christi.

The Islanders will return home to host Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, Oct. 17, in the annual Dig Pink match at the Dugan Wellness Center. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
