HAMMOND, La. – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball team earned its fifth straight victory with a 3-1 victory (25-17, 28-30, 25-13, 25-10) over Southeastern La. (6-14, 0-8 SLC) to improve to 12-7 and 7-1 in Southland Conference play. Sophomores Ivy Baresh and Shayla Maldonado each had a career day Saturday afternoon at the University Center.
Baresh picked up her ninth double-double of the season with a career-high 21 kills on .311 hitting and matched a career-high 22 digs. She also tied a career-high three service aces while Maldonado had another impressive match in the libero position. The Katy, Texas native registered a career-high 34 digs, just three digs short of tying the all-time single match record for a four-set match. She also chipped in two of the Islanders season match-high nine service aces. The Islanders have clinched nine out of its last 10 matches.
Junior Brianna Brink finished with 10 kills to help the Islanders' offense tally 58 kills in the match. Senior Logen Bourque dished out 51 assists for the second straight game and it marked the fifth time this season where she has tallied 50 or more assists in a match.
Defensively, the Islanders were led by Maldonado and Baresh, who recorded 56 of the Islanders' season-match high 93 digs. Megan Olivarez also finished in double figures with a career-high 13 digs.
The Islanders jumped out to an early 10-6 lead in the first set after straight kills by Shaquinn Parker and Ashley Phelps. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi then put together a 3-0 run to pad its lead to 15-10. During the run, Maldonado added an ace after a Lady Lions' service error and Brink put down a kill. Following a Southeastern timeout, the Islanders maintained the lead the rest of the way en route to a 25-17 first-set victory. Baresh picked up six kills and nine digs in the first set while Bourque passed out 12 assists and Maldonado registered eight digs. The Islanders hit .150 and limited the Lady Lions to just .024 hitting.
Southeastern came roaring back in the second set to clinch an intense 30-28 victory that featured 11 ties. The Islanders fell behind early but a kill by Parker at 20-20 kept the Islanders within reach. After three straight points by the Lady Lions pushed the home team ahead 23-20, the Islanders battled back with a 4-1 run to knot the set at 24-24. Both teams rallied back and forth to even the set at 26-26. The Lady Lions then scored back-to-back points to push ahead 28-26, however, the Islanders were awarded a point after Southeastern's coach Jim Smoot was issued a yellow and red card. The Lady Lions followed with a kill to seal the set 30-28. Southeastern hit .267 in the set and held the Islanders to just .075 hitting.
The Islanders answered back in the third and fourth sets to win the match. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi hit a solid .357 in the third set and limited Southeastern to .188 hitting to win 25-13. The Islanders jumped out to a 10-2 lead and held the lead through the whole set. With the Islanders ahead 16-8, Baresh tallied a kill and back-to-back hitting errors by the Lady Lions padded the Islanders' lead to 19-8. After a kill by Southeastern, the Islanders put together another 3-0 run to extend their lead to 13. During the run, Baresh and Sarah Sanchez each collected a kill. The Islanders and Lady Lions rallied back-and-forth until the Islanders closed the set with a kill by Phelps.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi had an explosive fourth set on .345 hitting to win 25-10. The Islanders opened with a 16-5 lead before extending the lead to 21-7 on a 4-0 run. After a kill by the Lady Lions, the Islanders scored three straight points on a Southeastern error and straight kills by Baresh and freshman Morgan Carlson. After trading points, a Lady Lions' service error gave the Islanders a 25-10 fourth-set victory.
The Islanders will wrap its Louisiana road trip on Monday, Oct. 14, when the team takes on Nicholls State in Thibodaux, La. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
