NEW ORLEANS – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team picked up its fourth straight victory including its sixth Southland Conference win Thursday evening with a 3-1 victory (19-25, 25-23, 25-12, 25-16) over New Orleans. The Islanders finished with three players in double figures in kills and tallied a season-high 10 blocks at the Human Performance Center.
Brianna Brink powered the Islanders' (11-7, 6-1 SLC) offense with 15 kills on .303 hitting while Ivy Baresh collected 14 kills, nine digs and tied a career-high five blocks. Freshman Shaquinn Parker had an impressive night with 11 kills on .444 hitting while recording four blocks. Ashley Phelps also contributed to the offense with nine kills. Senior Logen Bourque ran the offense with 51 assists and tallied eight digs. The Islanders hit .237 in the match and limited the Privateers (3-17, 0-7 SLC) to just .109 hitting. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi's defense also had a solid night with 61 digs, including a career-high 21 from Shayla Maldonado. The Islanders out-blocked UNO 10-5 and now have sealed eight of its last nine matches.
The Privateers jumped out to an early first set win on .194 hitting. After battling back and forth to start the set, UNO pulled away on a 6-0 run to take a 13-8 lead. Parker followed with a kill before both teams rallied. Sarah Sanchez pulled the Islanders within five at 19-14 with consecutive kills but New Orleans answered with straight points to take a 21-14 lead. After rallying, the Islanders put together a 3-0 run with kills by Haley Satterwhite Day, Parker and an UNO error to trim the deficit to five. However, after a Parker kill, the Privateers captured the first set 25-19 on a kill. Parker and Brink led the Islanders in the first set with four kills apiece.
The Islanders bounced back to squeeze out a 25-23 second-set victory. Baresh propelled the offense with seven kills while Maldonado picked up six digs. After falling behind early, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi went on a 6-1 run to cut UNO's lead to one at 9-8. After trading points back and forth, the Islanders evened the set at 19-19 on consecutive errors by the Privateers. UNO followed with a kill before Baresh responded with straight kills to put the Islanders in front 21-20. After an Islanders' service error, Baresh once again put down two kills to give the Islanders a 23-21 lead. Following a New Orleans' timeout, the Islanders garnered another point on a Privateer error and after two straight points by UNO, the Islanders sealed the set 25-23 on a service error.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi cruised through the next two sets to win the match. In the third set, the Islanders hit .444 and received five kills apiece from Brink and Baresh. The Islanders jumped out to an 11-8 lead and held the lead through the whole set. Following a Privateer timeout, the home team pulled within one on a kill and an Islanders' error, but straight kills by Brink padded the Islanders' lead to three. After a kill by UNO at 14-12, the Islanders went on an 11-0 run to win the set 25-12. During the run, Baresh added three kills, Sanchez chipped in one and Brink tallied two aces.
New Orleans opened the fourth set with a 9-6 lead before the Islanders gained momentum on a 5-1 run to take a 13-11 lead. Texas A&M - Corpus Christi then padded the lead to 18-14 on four straight points. During the run, Brink tacked on straight kills, Parker added one and Hailey King chipped in an ace. The Islanders then rolled on to win 25-16 on a 7-1 run.
The Islanders will continue conference play in Louisiana on Saturday, Oct. 12, when the team takes on Southeastern La. in Hammond, La. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
