CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will look to continue its winning streak on Thursday, Oct. 10, when it travels to New Orleans to take on first-year Southland Conference member New Orleans at 7 p.m. The Islanders have won seven of its last eight matches, including three straight and will meet the Privateers for just the second time in program history.
The Islanders are off to the best Southland Conference start in program history with a 5-1 record including a 10-7 overall record. The squad is tied with Oral Roberts in the conference rankings and sits behind undefeated Central Arkansas (6-0) and Sam Houston State (6-0).
Last weekend, the Islanders clinched two home victories over Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian. Ivy Baresh registered back-to-back double-doubles to lead the Islanders. The sophomore tallied a match-high 16 kills and 18 digs in a 3-1 win against Incarnate Word. She followed that with an outstanding performance against Abilene Christian. She picked up her eighth double-double of the season and matched a career-high 16 kills while recording 17 digs to help the Islanders win 3-1. Brianna Brink also had an impressive homestand with 30 kills on .411 hitting. She registered 3.75 kills per set while committing just seven errors. Brink tallied 12 kills against Incarnate Word and followed it with a season-high 18 kills on an impressive .483 hitting against Abilene Christian.
The Islanders currently lead the conference in assists with 12.94 per set, third in kills with 13.60 per set and third in digs with 15.85 per set. In conference matches only, the Islanders lead the league with 17.18 digs per set.
Baresh is leading the Islanders' offense this season with 3.43 kills per set (4th SLC) and 209 kills on the year and is second on the team in digs with 3.31 digs per set (15th SLC). Brink is right behind Baresh with 2.97 kills per set (15th SLC) and 181 total kills. Ashley Phelps is also averaging 2.97 kills per set. Senior Logen Bourque is leading the team with 10.79 assists per set (2nd SLC) and has collected 669 assists this season for a total of 3,875 assists in her career. Defensively, Hailey King powers the team with 4.07 digs per set (8th SLC) and 248 digs on the year. Freshman Shaquinn Parker is leading the Islanders at the net with 35 total blocks this season, including 29 block assists.
New Orleans enters Thursday's match with a 3-16 record including a 0-6 record in conference play. The Privateers are coming off a 3-0 non-conference win to Alcorn State Tuesday night at home. Prior to that, New Orleans had dropped six straight matches. Marti Richmiller leads the Privateers with 1.98 kills per set and Celeste Ramirez runs the offense with 5.00 assists per set. Defensively, UNO is led by Ramirez's 1.88 digs per set and Richmiller's 1.82 digs per set. Taylor Berry also helps the defense with 33 total blocks.
Thursday's match will mark the second meeting between the two schools with the Privateers holding the 1-0 series advantage. The Islanders dropped a 3-1 loss to UNO 13 years ago on Sept. 16 in New Orleans.
The Islanders will continue conference play in Louisiana on Saturday, Oct. 12, when the team takes on Southeastern La. in Hammond, La. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
