CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will return to the Dugan Wellness Center to host first-year Southland Conference member Incarnate Word on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. After playing its last 13 out of 15 matches on the road, the Islanders will return home to the Coastal Bend in its annual "Blue Out" match.
The Islanders come into Thursday's match with an 8-7 record including a 3-1 record in conference play. The team split its conference road matches over the weekend after a tough 3-0 loss to Sam Houston State and a 3-2 five-set victory over Lamar. The Islanders have won five of its last six matches and currently sits behind four undefeated teams in the conference standings.
Ivy Baresh is leading the Islanders' offense this season with 3.34 kills per set (5th SLC) and 177 kills on the year. Junior Brianna Brink is following suit with 2.85 kills per set (15th SLC) and 151 total kills while senior Logen Bourque runs the Islanders' offense with 10.31 assists per set (4th SLC). She has collected 557 assists this season for a total of 3,763 assists in her career. Hailey King powers the Islanders' defense with 3.98 digs per set (8th SLC) and 211 digs on the year. Freshman Shaquinn Parker has been controlling the Islanders' net with 30 total blocks this season, including 24 block assists.
The Islanders are second in the conference in assists with 12.63 per set, third in kills with 13.33 per set and fourth in digs with 15.50 per set. In conference matches only, the Islanders are third in the league with 16.57 digs per set.
Incarnate Word enters Thursday's match with a 5-7 record including a 1-3 record in conference play. The Cardinals are coming off a 3-0 loss to Texas A&M – Kingsville in non-conference action. Prior to that, Incarnate Word dropped two straight to McNeese State and Angelo State. The Cardinals have lost five of their last six matches with the lone win coming against Nicholls, 3-1, in conference play. Angelique Vidaurri leads the Cardinals offensively with 132 kills on .233 hitting. Shaina Garza is second with 2.72 kills per set and 117 total kills. Danielle Suarez runs the offense with 5.74 assists per set and Taylor McClelland is second on the team with 4.58 assists per set. Defensively, Brittani Dear leads the team with 3.22 digs per set and Meaghan Patterson is averaging 1.09 blocks per set.
Thursday's match will mark the third meeting between the two schools with the series tied at one match apiece. The last time the Islanders and Cardinals met up was in 2000. The Islanders won the first match 3-2 before dropping a 3-1 loss to the Cardinals in San Antonio.
