CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team is back on the road for a two-match Southland Conference road trip. The Islanders have won five of their last six matches, including four straight, and will look to keep that streak alive Thursday, Sept. 26, when they take on Sam Houston Sate in Huntsville, Texas at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Islanders come into Thursday's match with a 7-6 record including a perfect 2-0 record in conference play. The squad picked up three wins last week in three different cities in a span of four days. The Islanders have swept their last four opponents and are at the top of the Southland with Oral Roberts, Central Arkansas, Stephen F. Austin and Northwestern State who all have a pair of conference wins. Sam Houston State also sits at the top with a 3-0 conference record.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi sealed victories against McNeese State and Houston Baptist last week and swept UTPA on Friday at home in non-conference play. Sophomore Ivy Baresh (4th, SLC) is powering the Islanders offense with 158 kills on .157 hitting while Brianna Brink (13th, SLC) has collected 130 kills this season. Logen Bourque runs the Islanders' offense with 10.52 assists per set, which is good for second in the conference. In conference play, the senior is leading the conference with a .526 hitting percentage. Defensively, Hailey King leads the Islanders with 3.82 digs per set (9th, SLC).
The Islanders sit at the top of the conference in assists with 12.89 per set and are third in kills and digs. The Islanders are averaging 13.59 kills per set and 15.26 digs per set. In conference play, the Islanders lead the league in digs with 16.17 per set and are sitting in second place in conference play with Oral Roberts with 14.33 assists per set. The team is also second in kills with 15.17 per set and fourth with a .274 hitting percentage.
Sam Houston State comes into the contest with a 6-6 record including a 3-0 record in conference play. The Bearkats shared the regular-season title last season with Central Arkansas and returns the 2012 conference player of the year, Deveney Wells-Gibson. Sam Houston State has won four of their last five matches including four sweeps. Wells-Gibson leads the team with 155 kills on .185 hitting. Tayler Gray runs the offense with 9.79 assists per set and defensively Breanna Homer leads the team with 3.79 digs per set. Haley Neisler also contributes to the defense with 30 blocks, including 29 block assists. The Bearkats are hitting .170 as a team while the Islanders are hitting .188 as a team.
Thursday's match will mark the 25th meeting between the two schools with the Bearkats holding an 18-6 series advantage. Last season, the Bearkats swept both matches. In the first meeting, the Bearkats captured a 3-0 (25-14, 26-24, 15-11) victory in Corpus Christi. Haley Satterwhite Day led the team with six kills while Baresh chipped in five kills and 15 digs. In the second meeting, the Islanders fell short 3-1 (25-18, 25-12, 30-32, 29-27) in Huntsville. Baresh paced the Islanders with 15 kills and 15 digs, while Brink added 12 and Bourque recorded 46 assists and 13 digs.
The Islanders will continue conference play on the road Saturday, Sept. 28, against Lamar at 1 p.m. in Beaumont, Texas.
