HOUSTON – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball team clinched its third consecutive sweep and its second straight Southland Conference match Thursday with a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-22, 25-23) over Houston Baptist at Sharp Gym. Junior Ashley Phelps recorded a match-high 14 kills and junior Brianna Brink added 13 kills to lead the Islanders' offense.
The Islanders (6-6, 2-0 SLC) hit .228 in the match and limited the Huskies (5-7, 0-1 SLC) to just .140 hitting. Phelps hit .303 in the match while Brink hit .360. Senior Logen Bourque dished out a match-high 35 assists and Ivy Baresh and Hailey King powered the Islanders' defense. The Islanders collected a match-high 56 digs with Baresh tying a match-high 12 digs and King chipping in 11 digs. The Islanders also registered six blocks in the match.
The Islanders started off strong in the opening set with an 11-6 lead to force a Huskies' timeout. After back-and-forth rallies the Islanders put together a 3-0 run to pad its lead to 18-9. During the run Shaquinn Parker tallied two kills and Sarah Sanchez added one of her two aces. After a HBU timeout, both teams traded points before the Huskies pulled within five on a 4-0 run, but the Islanders stayed out in front to secure a 25-18 first-set victory. The Islanders hit .270 in the set and were led by Baresh, Phelps and Brink who each tallied four kills apiece.
The Huskies responded back in the second set with a 5-0 early lead. After an Islanders' timeout, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi scored three straight points to pull within two with a kill by Brink and two Huskies' hitting errors. From there, the Islanders and Huskies rallied back-and-forth with nine ties. With the set even at 19-19, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi surged ahead with four consecutive points to take a 23-19 lead. During the run, Phelps tallied two kills and Bourque added one. After straight points by HBU, Phelps put down another kill to give the Islanders set point. The Huskies followed with a kill before Baresh capped the set at 25-22 with a kill. The Islanders hit .157 in the second set and limited HBU to just .113 hitting. Brink and Phelps each tallied five kills apiece and Bourque passed out 11 assists.
The Islanders and Huskies battled early in the third set before the Islanders built a three-point lead with three straight points to push ahead 13-10. After a HBU timeout, the Islanders stayed out in front the rest of the way. The Huskies pulled within one with two straight points at 20-19 but two kills by Bourque and an attacking error by the Huskies gave the Islanders a 23-19 lead. After trading points, Phelps finished the set and the match at 25-23 with her fifth kill of the set. The Islanders hit a set-high .286 and out-blocked the Huskies 4-2 in the final set.
