CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team will head back out on the road to Arlington, Texas, to compete in the Hilton Maverick Classic this weekend. The Islanders are set to take on Mississippi Valley State on Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. before facing UTSA and UT Arlington on Saturday, Sept. 14. All three matches will be played at the College Park Center.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi comes into the weekend with a 2-5 record after dropping a tough four-set loss to UTSA on Monday in the home opener at the Dugan Wellness Center. The Islanders fell 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-17, 25-23) to the Roadrunners in front of an all-time record crowd of 1,270. Ivy Baresh and Brianna Brink led the team with 14 kills apiece while Logen Bourque recorded her fourth double-double of the season.
The Islanders are averaging 11.9 kills per set and 15.1 digs per set. Sarah Sanchez is hitting .286 and has 25 kills while Baresh leads the Islanders with 84 kills. Bourque has collected 256 assists this season while Hailey King leads the defense with 92 digs. Freshman Shaquinn Parker has a team-high 13 kills this season while Sanchez has 12 total blocks, including 10 block assists.
The Islanders will open the classic against Mississippi Valley State who comes into Friday's match with a 3-7 record. The Devilettes have played their first 10 matches away from home. Halee Clark leads the team with 45 kills on .112 hitting while Taylor Delaire is hitting .162 with 42 kills. Athena Abary leads the offense with 94 assists and Steffi Rodriguez leads the defense with 2.79 digs per set. MVSU has sealed wins against Rust College, Tougaloo College and Philander Smith College. Friday's match will mark the first meeting between the two schools in program history.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi will take on UTSA (4-4) in the second match of the classic on Saturday and for the second time this season. The Islanders will look for revenge from Monday's 3-1 loss. The team is looking to clinch their first victory over UTSA in program history. Saturday's contest will mark the 18th meeting between the two teams. UTSA is hitting .232 as a team behind McKenzie Adams' 162 kills. Dajana Boskovic has 66 kills on the year.
The Islanders will face the Mavericks in the final match of the classic at 7 p.m. on Saturday. UTA enters Friday's matches with a 4-2 record with wins over SLC foe Abilene Christian, Grambling State, Louisiana Tech and Baylor. The Mavericks hit .180 as a team and are led by Charmaine Whitmore who has 42 blocks on the season while hitting .247. Amanda Welsh runs the offense with 5.70 assists per set and Caitlyn Cooney leads the team defensively with five digs per set. Saturday's contest will mark the 17th meeting between the two schools with the Mavericks holding the 2-14 advantage. The Islanders and Mavs met up last season in Arlington and the Islanders picked up a 3-0 victory over the former Southland opponent. It marked the first win over UTA in Coach Tony Graystone's tenure and the second in program history. Brink tallied 10 kills and Bourque recorded 35 assists in the match.
