CORPUS CHRISTI – The Texas A&M - Corpus Christi volleyball team opened the 2013 season Monday morning with the start of practices. Head Coach Tony Graystone enters his fifth season at the helm of the Islanders' program and returns nine letterwinners from a team that finished with school records in overall wins (21) and Southland wins (12) while finishing the season with a program-best third place. Graystone and his staff will also welcome the addition of six newcomers.
"The first day of workouts has gone pretty much as expected, everyone is working hard and trying to make a good first impression," Graystone said. "There's a lot to do obviously, but we're starting from a pretty good place and in two weeks I think we're going to be really pleased.
"Right now it's about getting everyone playing at the same speed and getting the new players familiar with our system. But we'll get past that phase pretty quickly and start thinking about lineups, positions and eventually opening weekend."
Senior Logen Bourque will lead the way after becoming the first Islander to reach 3,000 assists in a career in 2011, and Brianna Brink will also be back after being named an honorable mention All-Southland selection a year ago. Joining Bourque as seniors will be Sarah Sanchez and Renee Ramirez. In addition, the Islanders return Ivy Baresh, Ashley Phelps, Shayla Maldonado, Alexis Fritz, Haley Satterwhite Day, Megan Olivarez, Morgan Brubaker and Hailey King.
Texas A&M - Corpus Christi came together for the first time Monday for two-a-days and workouts as they lead up to the season opener on Friday, Aug 20. The Islanders kick the season off in Denver, traveling to the Pioneer Classic for a two-day tournament. On the opening day, the Islanders will take on UC Irvine before facing the home Pioneers and Air Force on Saturday, Aug. 31. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will host its first match of the season on Monday, Sept. 9 vs. UTSA at the Dugan Wellness Center.
"This is definitely our favorite time of year, and we couldn't be more excited about this team and what we think they can accomplish this season," Graystone added.
