Morgan Carlson Signs NLI With Islanders Volleyball

With senior Shannon Hullum completing her eligibility at Texas A&M – Corpus Christi at the conclusion of this season, head coach Tony Graystone knew he would have big shoes to fill on the right side of the Islanders offensive attack. On Wednesday afternoon around 5 p.m. Central time, he got a National Letter of Intent from Morgan Carlson to help ease the worries he had about the position.

A 6-0 right side hitter from Reno, Nev., Carlson is a tall, left-handed player that fits the mold of the Islanders lone senior on the 2012 team, and will bring some more depth to the lineup in the next year.

"We knew we were losing Shannon, and we wanted to replace her with another left-handed, right side hitter," said Graystone. "She is a really good blocker, has a good arm swing, and she is going to fit in with our system pretty well. We're really big on her and like her game a lot."

She recently was named First Team Division I Sierra in Nevada, and helped her Bishop Manogue team to a semifinals finish in the state volleyball tournament. The team finished the year with a 28-7 record after dropping a heartbreaking 3-2 match against runner-up Green Valley and beating the eventual state champion Spanish Springs in the regional championship the week before.

In the playoffs, Carlson picked up 10 kills and four blocks in the Division I North regional semifinals, and then added eight kills against Spanish Springs to win the north region and advance to the final four in the state.

Carlson was a first team all-league pick all four years of her high school career that started in California and ended in Nevada. She was also named to the All-Northern Nevada team. She is a three-year first team all-league player in basketball coming into her senior season and will continue playing during the spring of her final year. In volleyball, she averaged over 10 kills and three blocks per match during her final campaign.

The newest Islander will no doubt be following her team closely this weekend as the Islanders make a return to the Southland Conference Tournament when they take on Oral Roberts at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
