NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-22) final against Stephen F. Austin in a Southland Conference road match, the final one of the year for the Islanders. The team will return home for a pair of matches against Lamar and McNeese State on Thursday and Saturday before playing in the Southland Conference Tournament next week in Conway, Ark.
The Islanders (19-10, 10-6 Southland) put up a valiant effort in all three sets, but they were unable to overcome the Ladyjacks (20-10, 10-6 Southland) on their home court.
The first set started out with SFA scoring the first four points as they gained early control of the period. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi trailed until midway through the set when a kill by Hullum helped tie the score at 13-13, but three consecutive points for the Ladyjacks extended the lead back to three at 16-13. The lead closed to one several times, including when back-to-back kills by Hullum made it a 23-22 deficit, but SFA would go on to take a 25-23 final for a 1-0 match lead.
The second set opened close and was a 7-6 SFA lead until the Ladyjacks scored 6-of-9 points for a 13-9 advantage. An Ashley Phelps kill closed the gap to 18-17, but back-to-back points by SFA made it a 20-17 lead. The Ladyjacks would go on to take a 25-21 final and a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.
The final set was close throughout and level at 22-22 before the final three points from SFA made it a 25-22 final and a 3-0 match win.
The Islanders will host Lamar on Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center, with the match against McNeese State coming at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. The team will honor Shannon Hullum, the lone senior of the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi team.
