HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team picked up its 19th win of the season on Monday night, taking a 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-16) final over the Prairie View A&M Panthers on the road. The team will finish its road schedule for the year on Tuesday night in a 6:30 p.m. against the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks.
The Islanders (19-9) picked up the third consecutive win after losing three straight, and look to carry the momentum into the final Southland Conference road match of the year on Tuesday night against SFA. Prairie View (11-19) has one match left before starting play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament next week.
Logen Bourque led the Islanders with 24 assists and seven digs, while Shannon Hullum was tops in kills with nine. Brianna Brink finished the night with seven kills and Ashley Phelps had five against the Panthers.
In the opening set, the Islanders fell behind by a 6-1 score on an attack that included three PVAM service aces, but the team would rally to take the lead behind kills from Courtney Hall and Tyger Holt to get within one, and Brink came up with back-to-back kills to make it a 12-11 lead for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. The team would never trail after that point as two straight kill by Hullum made it a 14-12 score and forced a Panthers timeout.
Brink added a service ace after the break to make it a 15-12 score, and the Islanders would go on to finish it 25-19 with Hullum providing the final kill for the 1-0 lead.
In set two it was the Islanders who came out fast, taking a 4-1 lead and never trailing on the way to a 2-0 lead. A kill by Holt, a block assist by Holt and Haley Satterwhite, and a Micah Nolan service ace put the team on top to stay in the early going. The lead would stretch to as many as six point on a block solo from Hall to make it 18-12, and another block solo, this time by Brink, ended the set at 25-18 for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi.
The final set was another in which the Islanders would never trail, with the closest the Panthers would come to taking a lead being at 3-3 in the early going. A kill by Holt, a Brink service ace, a Satterwhite kill and a block solo by Hullum made it 7-3 and gave the Islanders a margin they would not relinquish.
The Panthers closed to within two points on multiple occasions, but a run at 12-10 made it a five-point lead at 15-10 behind a Brink kill and a block solo by Holt. After PVAM closed to within three points at 19-16, six straight points finish the match with a 25-16 Islanders win.
Satterwhite started the final run with a kill, with kills from Hall and Brittney Church following to expand the advantage. After a pair of attack errors made it match point at 24-16, Alexis Fritz served up an ace to clinch the match for the Islanders.
Next up for the Islanders will be the Tuesday night match against SFA in Nacogdoches. After that final road match, the team will return home for the final two matches of the year against Lamar and McNeese State. Senior Shannon Hullum will be recognized before the match against McNeese State, as she is the lone senior on the 2012 Islanders team.
