Volleyball Tries For Season Sweep of UTPA in Final Non-Conference Home Match
The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team will try to earn a season sweep on Tuesday night when it hosts the Texas – Pan American Lady Broncs in the final non-conference home match of the season. The team will host the Lady Broncs at 7 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders are 15-6 on the season and would move to within one of the all-time single-season wins mark in program history with a win on Tuesday. The previous high for a season is when the 2005 team went 17-18 to set the mark.
Shannon Hullum, the lone senior on the team, leads the offense in kills (217) and is one of four players to reach the century mark in kills this season, with Brianna Brink (187), Ivy Baresh (174) and Brooke Alverson (134) rounded out the quartet.
Micah Nolan has a team-high 321 digs while Baresh is second with 222 and setter Logen Bourque has surpassed 100 on the year with 165. Bourque is the team leader in assists at 723 this season, while Alverson (71) and freshman Tyger Holt (52) have surpassed 50 total blocks in 2012.
UTPA is 9-12 overall after a split of matches last week. The Lady Broncs topped Chicago State this past Saturday after falling to Texas A&M – Kingsville in Edinburg. Michelle McNamee (178) leads the team in kills while Diara Reynolds (168), Krysta Freitas (144), Haley Durham (125) and Sarah Davis (114) have all surpassed the 100-kill mark on the year. Nycole Masaki has a team-high 728 assists, Juri Franzen leads in digs with 395 and Durham leads the team with 49 total blocks.
The last meeting between the two teams was early on in the season, with the Islanders coming out on top by a 3-1 final. After Texas A&M – Corpus Christi won the two opening sets to start the match, UTPA rallied to make it 2-1 before the Islanders finished it off with a 25-19 final and 3-1 match victory.
