Islanders Open Southland Play Against Central Arkansas in Annual ‘Wash Out’ Match

The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team will open its 2012 home schedule on Thursday, taking on preseason Southland Conference favorite Central Arkansas in the annual 'Wash Out' match at the Dugan Wellness Center. Match time is set for 7 p.m. and fans are encouraged to wear blue to support the Islanders in the Southland Conference opener for both teams.

For the 2012 season, fans coming to Dugan Wellness Center and who do not have a Texas A&M – Corpus Christi parking pass should park in the Bayside Parking Garage that can be accessed through the first campus entrance. A map can be found by clicking this link: Campus Map.

After spending the first three weeks on the road, the Islanders are 7-4 on the season after three tournaments and two single matches in pre-conference play. Central Arkansas comes in at a perfect 11-0, winning tournaments at Southern Miss and Stetson in addition to a home tournament in Conway, Ark.

The early schedule was built to test Texas A&M – Corpus Christi early and get the team ready for the hardest part of the schedule, a double round-robin slate against each Southland Conference opponent.

Leading the Islanders offensively to this point in the season is senior Shannon Hullum with 109 kills on the year. Sophomore Brianna Brink follows her closely at 106, with freshman Ivy Baresh just under the century mark at 96 kills through the first 11 matches. Junior Micah Nolan leads the team in digs with 162, and is also ranked 1st in the Southland and 11th in the nation with a 0.57 services aces per set average that totals 20 aces for the year. Fellow junior Logen Bourque has 366 assists, ranking her 72nd in assists per set with a 10.49 average, and junior Brooke Alverson has a team high 28 total blocks on the year.

The Sugar Bears have the national leader in assists per set as Marissa Collins is averaging 12.7 per set and has 419 total in 2012. Jessica Hays is tops on the UCA team with 114 kills, with Jessica Nagy in second with 95 on the year. Shelbee Berringer has a team high 148 digs to lead the Sugar Bears, while Taylor Hammonds is tops with 26 total blocks.
