Islanders Earn Sweep Over Hofstra in Opening Match of Mean Green Classic

DENTON – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team picked up another win on Friday morning, sweeping the Hofstra Pride 3-0 (25-19, 27-25, 25-17) in the opening match of the Mean Green Volleyball Classic hosted by North Texas. The second match of the day is set for a 2:30 p.m. start against Eastern Michigan at the Mean Green Volleyball Center.

The Islanders move to 6-3 with the win, the quickest the team has reached six wins in school history. The previous best was in 11 matches by both the 2004 and 2011 teams. Hofstra suffered just its second loss of the year and moved to 8-2 after the defeat.

Ivy Baresh led the Islanders offensively; picking up nine kills while both Shannon Hullum and Brooke Alverson had eight apiece. Logen Bourque had another 25 assists in the match, while also leading the team with nine digs. Micah Nolan had eight digs while Baresh picked up seven against the Pride.

The first set opened with kills by Hullum and Baresh that were followed by a Nolan service ace to make it a 3-0 lead, but Hofstra came back to make it 4-3 early on. The lead was extended to 8-3 with a 4-0 run powered by a kill from Baresh and three errors by Hofstra. The advantage remained between three and four for the majority of the set until a kill by Brink and a Bourque service ace extended it to 18-13 as Hofstra called the first timeout of the set. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi forced another timeout by the Pride after another Nolan service ace made it a 22-16 score, and Bourque finished the set with a kill off of a dig to make it a 25-19 final and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Early in the second set, both teams were battling hard while neither could get more than a two-point lead until Bourque picked up a service ace to make it 8-6 in favor of the Islanders, but Hofstra quickly responded with a kill and an ace of their own to even the score. The Islanders regained the advantage with an Alverson kill on a continue at the net to make it 12-10, but four straights points by the Pride gave them a 14-12 lead. Baresh stopped the run with a kill, but it was not tied again until a Brink kill made it 16-16. Tyger Holt and Hullum followed with a combined block to give their team the lead, and an attack error made it 18-16 as Hofstra called a timeout.

After the break, back-to-back points tied it once again, but Brink followed up with another kill to give her team the lead. Baresh and Holt combined for a block to make it a two-point advantage, but Hofstra got a kill and a Texas A&M – Corpus Christi attack error to even the score at 20-20.

The Islanders looked like they would end the set without much drama after taking a 24-21 lead, but three straight points by the Pride knotted the score at 24-24. It went to extra points before Texas A&M – Corpus Christi was able to close it out on a Brianna Brink kill that made it a 27-25 final for a 2-0 lead.

The third set provided more breathing room for the Islanders as they broke it open early before coasting to a 25-17 finish. With the score tied at 4-4, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi scored seven straight times to make it an 11-4 advantage. A pair of kills by Holt and one apiece from Alverson and Brink stretched the lead, and after a single Hofstra point, Holt, Hullum and Brink provided kills to make it a 13-5 score on a 9-1 run. The closest the score would get was at 18-13, but the Islanders scored seven of the final 11 points to complete the sweep of the Pride.
