Volleyball Drops Tough Match to Host Horned Frogs at TCU Invitational

FORT WORTH – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team fought hard, but came up short against the host TCU Horned Frogs on Saturday afternoon, dropping a 3-0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-22) final in the middle match of the TCU Nike Invitational. The Islanders will complete play in the tourney at 4:30 p.m. against SMU.

The team moves to 4-2 on the year, while TCU improves to 4-1 in 2012. Ivy Baresh led the team in digs, picking up 10 in the match to go along with nine kills. Brianna Brink had a team-high of 12 kills, the only Islanders player in double digits. Logen Bourque paced Texas A&M – Corpus Christi with a match-high 34 assists, while Shannon Hullum added seven kills, and Brooke Alverson finished with six.

In the first set a slow start made things difficult for the Islanders, as TCU gained an early 4-0 advantage. The team battled back to even the score at 8-8 behind a kill and block solo from Brink, as well as kills from Alverson, Baresh and one from Bourque that brought the set back to level. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi trailed throughout, tying the score at 15-15 on a kill by Hullum, before TCU scored three straight to regain the lead. The two teams traded points until the Horned Frogs got three consecutive scores to take a 24-21 advantage before Bourque broke the string with another kill, but the comeback would fall short on a TCU kill that ended it at 25-22.

The second set saw an early lead for the visiting team, with a Hullum kill making it 6-5 in favor of the Islanders. The teams played it extremely close until the midway mark, as Texas A&M – Corpus Christi evened the set before TCU scored five straights points to take a 17-12 lead. A kill by Alverson and a Hailey King service ace gained momentum for the Islanders as they closed the gap to one point on three different occasions, the latest coming after a kill by Shayla Maldonado and a Horned Frogs attack error made it 24-23. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi would come up just short once again however, suffering a 25-23 defeat to fall behind 2-0 in the match.

The final set featured a five-point lead by the Islanders as they scored six-of-seven following a tie at 5-5. Tyger Holt started it off with a kill, followed by a service ace from Micah Nolan. After a TCU point, Hullum put away a kill, Baresh and Alverson combined for a block and Baresh picked up back-to-back kills to make it an 11-6 score.

The Horned Frogs rallied to tie the score at 14-14 on a service ace, but a pair of errors by TCU game the Islanders a 16-14 lead. Another Nolan service ace made the score 18-15, but four straight from TCU saw Texas A&M – Corpus Christi trail for the first time in the set at 19-18. A service ace by Alverson late in the set cut the lead to one at 23-22, but two straight from the Horned Frogs made it a 25-22 final, and a 3-0 match win.
