Islanders Host Final Two Regular Season Matches Looking for Southland Bid

The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team will play its final two regular-season matches of the year this week, and will be looking to clinch a bid to the Southland Conference Tournament for just the second time in school history. The Islanders will play the UT Arlington Lady Mavs at 7 p.m. on Thursday night in the Dugan Wellness Center before closing out the year with Senior Day coming against Texas State at 1 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in Dugan.

The Islanders come into the week with a record of 13-18 overall and a 5-9 mark in Southland Conference matches. UTA is currently 11-7 on the year, with a 7-7 mark in league play. UT Arlington came out on top by a 3-0 score in Arlington when the teams met the first time this season.

With a win on Thursday night, the team could go a long way towards earning a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament that will be held in Conway, Ark. at the conclusion of the regular season. The Islanders control their own destiny due to holding a tiebreaker with the two teams that are currently tied with them in the standings, as well as the one team that is just one match behind in the league race.

Texas A&M – Corpus Christi's Brooke Alverson leads the team with 267 kills this year, just two in front of Brianna Brink and her 265 on the season. Shannon Hullum is also above the 200-kill plateau with a total of 242 for the Islanders. Logen Bourque has a team-high of 1,085 assists, the second-highest total in the Southland Conference, while Micah Nolan is the conference leader for digs with 590 to this point. Alverson also leads the team with 99 total blocks this season, with Jordan Flemmer placing second on the team with 62 blocks on the year.

Tara Frantz and her 343 kills lead the Lady Mavs into the match this year, while Amanda Aguilera is also above the 300-kill mark with 108 on the season. Amanda Welsh has a team-high 937 assists and Alicia Shaffer leads the team in digs with 557 entering the final week of the season. Emily Shearin has a commanding team lead on blocks with a total of 92, with the next highest total on the team being 54.

Once the Islanders finish playing UT Arlington, they will continue the season-ending home stand with their final match of the regular season against Texas State on Saturday. It will also be Senior Day for Jessica Korda, the lone senior on the Islanders roster. The native of Indiana will be honored prior to the match for her contributions to the program over her Islanders career.
