Logen Bourque Etches Name in Record Book as Islanders Topple Lady Demons

NATCHITOCHES, La. – Logen Bourque etched her name into the Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball record book on Saturday as the Islanders defeated the Northwestern State Lady Demons by a 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 15-10) final in a pivotal Southland Conference road match. The win moves the team into a tie for seventh place in the league standings, with the top eight teams advancing to the Southland Conference Tournament.

Bourque, the Islanders setter, added 42 assists to her season total, giving her the career record with 1,971 in her career. She also became just the fourth player in school history to record more than 1,000 in a season, finishing the match with 1,007 to this point in the season

The win gives Texas A&M – Corpus Christi a 13-16 record overall and a 5-7 mark in Southland Conference matches. Northwestern State moves to 8-17 on the year, 4-8 in league play. Offensively for the Islanders, Brooke Alverson led the team with a match-high of 17 kills, matching her career high set two matches ago against McNeese State. Sarah Sanchez was second on the team in both kills and digs with a career-high of 13 kills and 16 digs. against the Lady Demons. Micah Nolan led the team with 19 digs, moving her to just seven away from tying the career record and 19 from the all-time single-season mark. Bourque was also in double digits with 11 digs on the afternoon.

The first set saw the teams play close early on, with the score tied as late as 12-12 before four-straight points by the Lady Demons made it a 16-12 score. The Islanders closed to within two points at 24-22 before NSU closed out the set with a 25-22 final.

The second set was a back and forth battle between the two teams featuring 15 ties and five lead changes. The Islanders led by as many as three points at 17-14, but the Lady Demons rallied with three-straight of their own to even the set at 17-17. The final tie came at 23-23 before a kill by Alverson and a NSU attack error put the Islanders on top by a 25-23 final to even the match at 1-1.

After briefly trailing 4-2 to open the third set, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi took control the rest of the period, tying the score at 6-6 on a Bourque kill and taking their first lead at 8-6 on back-to-back error by NSU. The lead grew to as many as five points on a block by Jordan Flemmer and Bourque that made it a 12-7 score. The score closed to just two points at 18-16 before kills by Alverson and Jessica Korda stretched the lead back to four at 20-16.  That was part of the Islanders outscoring the Lady Demons 7-3 over the final 10 points to grab a 25-19 set and a 2-1 lead in the match.

The fourth set was another close one, featuring nine ties and three lead changes. Neither team led by more than four points and the final tie came as late as 22-22 before NSU scored three-straight points to take a 25-22 final and even the match at 2-2.

In the deciding fifth set, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi jumped out early, taking a 4-1 lead on a block solo and back-to-back kills by Sanchez. The Lady Demons would rally to tie it at 4-4 before the Islanders took an 8-6 lead on a kill by Alverson to changeover the teams. NSU once again tied the score at 8-8, but kills by Brianna Brink and Shannon Hullum gave the advantage back to the Islanders at 10-8. With the Islanders leading by just one at 11-10, a kill by Sanchez, a block by Hullum, a service ace by Nolan and a kill by Alverson finished the scoring at 15-10 to give Texas A&M – Corpus Christi the 3-2 match win.

Next up for the Islanders will be another pair of road matches next week against Stephen F. Austin on Thursday in Nacogdoches and Sam Houston State on Saturday in Huntsville.
