Islanders Fall to UTSA in Southland Conference Road Contest

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball Team lost a 3-0 (25-11, 25-17, 25-13) match to the first-place UTSA Roadrunners on Wednesday night in a Southland Conference road match. The two teams faced off for the second time this year, with this meeting coming at the UTSA Convocation Center.

The Islanders are now 11-15 overall and 3-6 in league play. UTSA improves to 15-8 on the year, with a 9-0 mark in Southland matches. The Roadrunners have yet to lose a set in a Southland Conference match this year.

Shannon Hullum led the Islanders effort with seven kills while Brooke Alverson was close behind at six on the night. Logen Bourque led the team with 11 assists while Micah Nolan had 11 digs in the match.

In the first set, the Islanders fell behind by as many as 6-1 before they rallied to within 8-7 on two kills from Alverson and a service ace by Hullum. From that point on however, UTSA went on a 13-1 run to make it a 21-8 score before eventually taking a 25-11 final.

The second frame was much closer and featured eight ties and three lead changes as the two teams battled. The Islanders scored first on a Hullum kill to make it 1-0 and again took a lead on a Jessica Korda kill to make it 2-1. With the score tied 4-4, an Alverson kill and a block assist by Bourque and Alverson made it a 6-4 lead for their team. UTSA rallied to tie it and then take the lead at 7-6 before Hullum had a kill to tie it back up at 9-9. From there, UTSA scored four-straight points to take a 13-9 lead on the way to a 25-17 victory.

The final set was close early, with the two teams playing to a 5-5 score. UTSA scored 12-of-17 points to take a 17-10 lead late in the set. The Islanders were unable to get closer than 17-11, eventually falling by a 25-13 final.

Next up for Texas A&M – Corpus Christi will be a match against McNeese State on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Dugan Wellness Center. Start time is set for 1 p.m., with an autograph session sponsored by New York Life scheduled for after the completion of the contest.
