CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball Team was unable to overcome the attack of the North Dakota Fighting' Sioux on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match. The Islanders fell by a 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-21) final to the Sioux at the Dugan Wellness Center.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi is now 11-14 on the year while UND improves to 18-4 this season. Jessica Korda led the team with seven kills in the match, while Logen Bourque had a team-high 12 assists and Micah Nolan led with 11 digs.
The first set saw the Islanders fall behind by a 6-1 score before rallying to within three at 8-6 on a UND attack error. The Sioux once again extended the lead to 18-13, with Texas A&M – Corpus Christi closing the gap to 18-15 on kills by Korda and Brianna Brink. North Dakota was too much, taking a 25-16 win for a 1-0 set lead.
The second set started out with the two teams trading points to a 4-4 tie early in the period. UND was able to make it a 7-4 advantage until the Islanders rallied with help from a block assist by Brink and Tina Chavis to make it a 9-9 score. UND would not be denied however, scoring 16 of the final 21 points to take a 25-14 final and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third set was the closest of the three; with the Islanders taking the lead several times in a set that featured nine ties and six lead changes. UND started out fast, taking a 5-0 lead, before A&M – Corpus Christi responded by scoring seven-of-eight points to grab a 7-6 lead on back-to-back kills from Korda. UND regained the lead and led 10-8 when three-straight points by the Islanders made it an 11-10 advantage. A&M – Corpus Christi once again rallied when trailing 13-11, scoring three consecutive points on a Nolan service ace and a block by Sarah Sanchez and Jordan Flemmer to regain a 14-13 lead.
The teams played to a 16-16 tie before three points by the Sioux made it a 19-16 score in favor of UND. The Islanders closed to within two pints at 22-20 on back-to-back kills from Korda and Chavis, but it was not enough as UND took a 25-21 set for the 3-0 match victory.
Next up for A&M – Corpus Christi will be a Southland Conference road match against UTSA on Wednesday, Oct. 19. The match is schedule for a 6:30 p.m. start at the UTSA Convocation Center in San Antonio.
