Islanders Take Huskies the Distance Before Falling in Hard-Fought Match

HOUSTON, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball Team was down early, but did not let the deficit phase them in a 3-2 (25-22, 25-17, 20-25, 26-28, 15-10) match against the Houston Baptist Huskies on the road Thursday night. The Islanders fell behind 2-0 before rallying to force a fifth set against HBU.

The Islanders are now 9-12 on the year while the Huskies improve to 15-5 overall. Shannon Hullum led all Texas A&M – Corpus Christi players with a team-high 11 kills. Logen Bourque had 41 assists in the match while also have a team-high 22 digs. Micah Nolan was close behind at 21 on the night. Hullum and Shelby Coppedge also added 13 digs apiece.

In the first set, the Islanders fell behind 2-0 early, but rallied to take their first lead at 4-3 on a Jessica Korda kill. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi extended the lead to three at 7-4 on a Brooke Alverson kill, but the Huskies rallied to tie the score at 10-10. After the Islanders fell behind, Arcidiacono tied it back up with a kill that made it an 11-11 score. A run of five-straight points by HBU made it a 16-11 lead, but the Islanders rallied to pull within one points several times. The score was 20-19 before HBU opened up a three-point advantage late in the set at 22-19. Just like before, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi rallied to within 23-22 before two-straight kills by the Huskies ended the set at 25-22 for a 1-0 lead.

The second set was much tougher for the Islanders with HBU taking an early 10-2 lead. The gap was closed to as little as three at 15-12, but six-straight points by the Huskies put the score at 21-12. They would go on to take a 25-17 set and a 2-0 lead.

Set three saw the Islanders rally when facing elimination to take a 25-20 win. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi fell behind early by a 3-1 score, but four-straight points on kills by Brianna Brink and Alverson turned it into a 5-3 advantage. The lead grew to 7-4 on a block by Alverson and Bourque, but HBU tied it at 9-9 in short order. A kill by Shannon Hullum and a block assist from Tina Chavis and Hullum extended the lead back to three at 12-9, with the Islanders never trailing in the set again and taking a 25-20 final to make it a 2-1 match.

The fourth set saw the Islanders lead early, and then face defeat before battling back to force a decisive fifth set. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi jumped out to an 8-4 lead on back-to-back kills by Brink and Arcidiacono. After the Huskies tied the score at 9-9, the Islanders regained the lead and stretched it to 12-10. It was short lived however, as HBU used a 5-0 run to take an 18-14 lead. Brink stopped the run with a kill, but the Huskies ran the score to 24-21 and had it at match point. The Islanders fought back, scoring three-straight points on kills from Hullum and Bourque to even it at 24-24. The teams traded points to 26-26 before an HBU attack error and a kill from Chavis made it a 28-26 to send it to the fifth set.

In the final frame, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi took the early lead, but was unable to complete the comeback as they fell by a 15-10 final. Kills by Brink and Chavis pushed the early lead to 4-1 as the Islanders started out hot. The Huskies slowly closed the gap before using a 3-0 run to take an 8-7 advantage. The teams were tied at 9-9 before HBU scored six-of-seven points to take a 15-10 win and the match by a 3-2 mark.

Next up for the Islanders will be a Southland Conference match on Saturday at Lamar.  Match time is set for 1 p.m. in Beaumont.
