CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi Volleyball team lost a tough, five-set affair on Thursday night by a 3-2 (23-25, 20-25, 28-26, 25-20, 15-11) final to the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks in Southland Conference action at the Dugan Wellness Center.
The Islanders fall to 8-10 on the year and are now 0-3 in conference play with the loss. SFA evened its record to 9-9 on the season and a 2-2 mark in league matches.
Brooke Alverson led the team with a career-high of 15 kills on the night, besting her previous mark of 14 set earlier this year. Brianna Brink was also in double digits for the Islanders with 10 on the night. Logen Bourque also set a new personal best while surpassing the 50-assist plateau for the first time in her career with 57 assists on the night. Micah Nolan led the team in digs with 26, while Bourque added 14 and Sarah Sanchez recorded 10. Alverson also added a team-high five block assists on the night.
Texas A&M – Corpus Christi started off the match by falling behind early, but rallying to take a 25-23 win in the first set. After falling behind early, a Brink kill brought the score to within one at 14-13. Down 23-20, the Islanders rallied for five-straight points on a pair of kills each from Alverson and Brink to lead the way to a 25-23 win.
Set two saw the Islanders down 4-1 early before scoring four-straight points on blocks from Alverson, Brink and Bourque to take a 5-4 lead. With the score tied 7-7, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi used kills from Shannon Hullum and Ashley Phelps to take an 11-7 advantage. The team would never trail again, opening up the margin to as many as five at 23-18 before completing a 25-20 win for a 2-0 lead.
Set three was a hard-fought battle featuring five ties, but just one lead change as the teams went to extra points to decide it. After the Islanders scored the first point, SFA added the next two for the only lead change of the period. Texas A&M – Corpus Christi fell behind by as many as eight points at 19-11, before going on a 13-5 run that squared the set at 24-24. The teams traded points to 26-26, before a kill and an attack error made it 28-26 in favor of the Ladyjacks.
Set four had SFA take control early, racing out to a 7-2 lead and hang on to the advantage for a 25-20 win that knotted the match at 2-2.
Set five looked promising early on as the Islanders grabbed a 5-1 behind four Isabella Arcidiacono kills to start things off. SFA battled back into the set though, knotting the score at 7-7 before taking their first lead of the frame. It was all knotted up at 8-8 before the Ladyjacks scored 7-of-10 points to take a 15-11 win to clinch the match.
