Islanders Suffer Setback against Texas State on the Road

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball team lost a 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-23) match against the Texas State Bobcats on Saturday afternoon in a Southland Conference road match.

The Islanders are now 8-9 on the season while moving to 0-2 in league matches. Texas State improves to 10-6 overall with a 1-1 record in Southland matches. Brooke Alverson led the team with nine kills in the match while Shannon Hullum added six in the contest. Tina Chavis paced the team with six block assists while Jessica Korda added two block solos.

 In the first set, the Islanders opened the scoring on a Brianna Brink kill before eight-straight points by the Bobcats, including three service aces in-a-row, made it an 8-1 score.  Texas A&M – Corpus Christi trailed 23-12 until kills from Alverson and Chavis, along with three block assists by Chavis closed the gap to 24-17. Despite the effort, the Islanders were unable to get any closer as they fell 25-17 in the set.

Set two was a very close affair early on, as the score was tied five times with no lead larger than two until Texas State gained a 14-11 lead midway through. The score remained within three at 17-14, until six-straight points by the Bobcats made it 23-14 advantage on the way to a 25-15 final.

Set three started out a little different for the Islanders, with the team gaining a 4-1 advantage on a block by Chavis and Korda, a service ace by Hullum and a kill by Alverson.  The Bobcats scored three-straight points of their own to tie it at 4-4, a common theme in the set. The period featured 11 ties between the teams and it was a constant back-and-forth battle.  Tied 8-8, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi got back-to-back kills from Hullum and a block assist by Hullum and Chavis to take a 12-8 lead. The Bobcats then rallied to tie the score at 12-12 on four-straight points.

The Islanders trailed 21-19 before scoring three consecutive points on a kill from Hullum, a block assist from Alverson and Hullum and a Micah Nolan service ace to take a 22-21 advantage and forcing Texas State to call a timeout. The break worked out for the Bobcats, as they scored four-of-five points to take a 25-23 set win and a 3-0 match victory.

Next up for the Islanders will be a return home to face Stephen F. Austin on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Dugan Wellness Center. It will be the first of three consecutive matches at home against conference opponents for the team.
