Volleyball Falls in Southland Conference Opener at UT Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas – The Texas A&M – Corpus Christi volleyball team lost a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-22) contest on the road to UT Arlington as they opened Southland Conference play on Thursday night. The team will travel to San Marcos for a meeting with Texas State at 2 p.m. on Saturday.

The Islanders are now 8-8 overall and 0-1 in Southland play on the year while the Mavs improved to 5-10 and 1-0 in league play. Shannon Hullum led the Islanders with 10 kills in the match and Logen Bourque was team leader with 29 assists while Micah Nolan added 13 digs to pace the team. Brooke Alverson and Jordan Flemmer led the team with three block assists each.

In the opening frame, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi fell behind early, and then rallied to take a 13-12 lead midway through the set. UTA scored three-straight points to regain the lead, one they would hold the rest of the way. The Islanders pulled to within 19-18 on a Sarah Sanchez service ace, but UTA scored six-of-seven points to take a 25-19 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

Set two played out much the same, with Texas A&M – Corpus Christi trailing early and rallying to even the score at 15-15 on a kill from Brianna Brink. The Mavs scored seven-of-eight points to take a commanding 22-16 lead on the way to a 25-19 set victory.

The third set had the Islanders taking the early advantage. With the score tied at 4-4, Hullum picked up a kill, followed by a pair from Brink to make it 7-4 in favor of Texas A&M – Corpus Christi. The lead sat at 10-7 when UTA scored five-straight points for a 12-10 lead before the Islanders tied it once again at 12-12. The Mavs then reeled off four-straight points to take a 16-12 advantage that Texas A&M – Corpus Christi would not recover from. Trailing 19-16, a kill and service ace from Hullum made the score 19-18, but the Mavs held on to take a 25-22 final and a three-set sweep.

Next up for the Islanders is a Saturday match at 2 p.m. on the road in San Marcos. Texas State fell by a 3-0 final to UTSA on Thursday night to move to 9-6 overall and 0-1 in Southland play. In two matches last season, Texas A&M – Corpus Christi went 0-2 against the Bobcats.
